Hey Cypriots!

I’m working on a project where I document urban environments that have been abandoned, using a fully analog process with photographic film.
I would like to visit Cyprus and document parts of the green zone, as this is exactly the kind of environment that I want to show in my images.
I know that it’s a restricted zone for many reasons (hence why it remains abandoned?), but I was wondering what are the rules regarding taking photos of (or around) the green zone? Is it legal?
Further more, is it possible to photograph the urban environment of the abandoned zone? Perhaps through wired fences if it is not directly accessible.

Images [like this](https://www.alamy.com/a-barrier-across-a-street-in-the-centre-of-nicosia-cyprus-which-marks-the-buffer-zone-between-the-turkish-and-greek-cypriot-sides-of-the-divided-city-image232743713.html) is what I’m hoping to capture.

Besides this, I’m also very interested in experiencing Cyprus, a place so full of culture and history 🙂

Thanks a lot from Denmark

  1. I don’t think you will be able to do it from outside. You can’t see much. I can imagine from outside you can take any pictures you like as long as it’s not some military installation.

  2. Permits are fairly easy to get from UN.

Also, you should definitely go to Varosha, it’s open to tourists now. Around Larnaca you will also find a lot of abandoned or half built apartment blocks and hotels.

  3. I want to say thanks for all the replies I have received so far. I will try to go for a permit. If I manage to pull through then I will write a new post updating you all. 🙂

  4. The sample image you have provided has a sign on the right saying taking photos is not allowed, I have seen it quite often. You probably will see that sign everywhere on the border. Other than that I have no idea what kind of permissions you would need and what is allowed. A part of the Varosha is public and you can visit there but not sure about the permission for photos.
