Teachers to get €900 bonus for marking this year’s Leaving Cert papers

  1. I’m shocked by the sums mentioned in the article. Make it a requirement that new teachers must take on some marking duties, or open this up to non-teachers.

  2. Yeah but they get taxed on that!….which is what teachers I know said when asked about their 6% payrise, or whatever it is.

Which sums up how detached from reality teachers are.

There’s so many examples. Another one that pops out from memory is a few years ago when they were, of course, looking for more money and one teacher was on the news saying “They better give us what we ask for or else I’ll be off to Dubai”. Off with ya!

  3. Had no idea that paid so well. Know some people who do it, it’s only a couple of weeks work (though others may sign up for longer stints, I don’t know).

  4. What’s the rate per paper? I’m surprised they can’t get people. The amounts quoted sound like good money.

  5. I can’t mark as I’ve kids and putting them in childcare would mean I lose money. I’d love to but it makes no sense for me.

  6. Interesting bit of associated information:

I know someone that works for the State Exam Commission. All JC & LC papers are kept in storage for 5years before being destroyed.

  7. As far as I remember it comes out to less than minimum wage depending on how many papers you’re allocated

Why would a teacher in contract take time out of there summer for that amount, and why would a teacher out of contract be persuaded by that amount

Just give it to students if you want to pay them prices, that’s the quality of marking you deserve for that amount
