Why does anyone care what he thinks? He’s not an engineer. His word on AI is about as valuable as anyone in this comment section.
Terrible headline.
And like the UK has ever done anything but have a light touch on AI? That’s been the case the 70s with the lighthill report. The only reason we have anything note worthy is due to the games industry and immigration – Deepmind.
Elon is thicker than mince. He should be roundly ignored.
Elon? He has a degree in economics right? CEO of Tesla because he bought the most shares. Boss of twitter because he bought it. He’s never invented anything. Never founded a company. Afaik has absolutely no experience with A.I
Why is anyone listening to him? Might as well ask Ja Rule or Neil Buchanan.
The late Professor Stephen Hawking predicted this over nine years ago in 2015. It’s not ‘new news’
Hes a scumbag billionaire who employs hundreds of talented engineers and scientists so he can palm off their hard work and idea as his own.
He wants to put the breaks on it because he wants to maintain the status quo, its all about maintaining power and control. Emergence of a genuine AI might just change things a little bit too much for his class.
Innovation is quicky followed by regulation in order to pull up the ladder and try to ensure, as much as possible, that smaller entities can’t compete with established business.
Considering the recent track record of 100% British f*ups, there’s a good chance Skynet will 1st become sentient in the UK
Why not forget who he is and think about what it is he’s saying? This goes beyond who we might like or not like. AI is progressing immensely quickly and it seems reasonable to say we need strict laws in place before the tech gets out of hand, not after. Many academics and people in the field are worried about this tech, with one recently saying ‘we’ve all seen Terminator, we know where this ends’ (BBC radio 4, 29/3/23). Once unleashed, we really don’t know where this tech will end. Even if the fears are groundless, let’s be cautious, please!
