Landlord Barry Cowen failed to declare rental income

  1. This is getting too common. None of the rest of the media even picked up on the Cathal Crowe one yesterday.

  2. Well shiver my timbers another politician forgetting to disclose property land and rent. I’m sure he’d be brought in front of RTE and giving a good dressing down by the reporter but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that.

  3. At what point is an “Inexperienced” government better than one that is exclusively experienced in perpetuating a failed system for their own personal gain?

  4. It’s hilarious to hear all the TDs going on about not vilifying landlords and that the majority of landlords abiding by the law when so many TDs can’t even be bothered following the laws themselves.

  5. Sure drink driving saw him awarded with a ministry (albeit with a delay), I wonder what they’ll give him for this?

More resources seemed to go into who leaked the info of his deciding to get behidn the week drunk than anything else on that matter too and we’ll probably see some similar nonsense here. The timing of this after his tweets this week should be enough to bring his political career to an end, but something tell me it will be out of the news by the middle of next week.

  6. Is there a politician who is not a landlord? Surprising that the eviction ban lasted that long.

  7. The only way this changes is if we the people demand change. A set of robust laws setting out standards in public office with harsh fines and debarment from public off for 10 years.

We needs to stop voting people in because of family connections.

  8. If I remember correctly an individual cannot stand for public office without obtaining a tax clearance certificate.

Which one gains by filing tax returns declaring all income and paying all taxes correctly due in a timely manner.

So, sid this man file false tax returns?

And if so, how much does he owe?

  9. TDs aren’t required to declare rental income. There’s a lacuna in the law.

The Second Schedule of the 1995 Act requires the following to be registered:-

    >(1) a remunerated trade, profession, employment, vocation or other occupation of the person concerned (other than that of office holder or member or an occupation to which Part IV applies) at any time during the appropriate period, in relation to that person, specified in section 5 (1) or 20 the remuneration from which to the person concerned during that period exceeded F99[€2,600],

Being a landlord is not a trade, profession, employment, vocation or other occupation.

You are required to register ownership of land, other than the family home, in effect.

    >(4) any interest in land of the person concerned, being an interest the value of which exceeded F100[€13,000] at any time during the appropriate period aforesaid, including—

    >(a) the interest of the person in any contract entered into by him or her for the purchase of land, whether or not a deposit or part payment has been made under the contract, and

    >(b) the interest of the person in—

    >(i) any option held by him or her to purchase land, whether or not any consideration has been paid in respect thereof, or

    >(ii) land in respect of which such an option has been exercised by the person but which has not yet been conveyed to the person,

    >but excluding any interest in land consisting of any F101[private home of the person or of his or her spouse or civil partner,] that is to say, a building or part of a building that is occupied by the person or his or her spouse or a child of the person or of the spouse as a separate dwelling and any garden or other land usually occupied with the dwelling, being land that is subsidiary or ancillary to it, is required for its amenity or convenience and is not being used or developed primarily for commercial purposes,

    It’s a fairly obvious *lacuna*.

  10. This seems pretty small beer. We’ve either reached the bottom for political corruption or are about to see the classic Ditch “bait and switch “.

  11. I’m not surprised but I’m also shocked. The sheer brazenness of what he said and now this. The timing of the release of this is fucking amazing. I’d say their editor was fucking delighted when he said that. Just knowing they had this nugget ready to go.
