I’m visiting Norway in September.
I really wanted to drive from Bergen to Oslo, this is the last leg of my trip. However I was looking at rental prices and it will cost me 756.00CAD(5,789.32NOK) to rent the car for 1 day to drive from Bergen to Oslo. This does not include fuel. This is extremely high since the train is only approximately $100CAD.
I am using [discovercars.com](https://discovercars.com) to find a rental car. I’m picking the cheapest option available too.
Does Norway have any local rental companies that may be cheaper?

Car rentals in Norway are very expensive. Consider renting a much smaller car than you would normally do in North America. I once rented a 1 cylinder, 0.8 liter car. It did the job and it was affordable.
Taking the train is beautiful and may be a good alternative – the views on over the mountains are spectacular. The trains are also very good standard compared to what you experience in the US.
You could try Finn: https://www.finn.no/reise/leiebil/
Why do you want to drive? The train ride is way more comfortable and scenic.
I think dropping cars off at different cities is extra expensive here in Norway.
Seems much cheaper through Hertz.
Are some rental car companies better than others in Norway?
Don’t use [discovercars.com](https://discovercars.com), it seems like a scammy site that wants a cut. Go to [Hertz.com](https://Hertz.com) or some of the other rental agencies. I am Norwegian and checked on Hertz for a trip from Bergen airport to Oslo airport was 450CAD in a small vehicle same day return in Oslo or 600CAD for a Toyota RAV4 picked up in Bergen at 8am and delivered at 3pm the next day in Oslo.
Also, cars are expensive in Norway and so is workers. So a Toyota RAV4 cost double in Norway because of car taxes. And you are most likely paying for someone to drive the car back to Bergen and that is a long drive and might be a two day drive for an employee.
And just so you know, it is not like you are driving on a highway from Bergen to Oslo, you are driving on simple mountain roads at times, sometimes only one car can pass, sometimes the mounain road is closed because of road work. The summer season is short.
No idea how much 750cad is… if you write it in NOK or euros it’s easier to say wether this is ‘normal’ or not.

September 3; $496 cad
But why would you drive?
I used Hertz two years ago to drive from Oslo to Bergen. It was a 4-door Toyota Corolla, and it cost me 1033 NOK per day. In addition, there was an 1875 NOK one-way fee, 160 NOK road tax, 179 NOK in road tolls (Autopass) and 400 NOK for insurance. That would equal 535 CAD for a one day trip excluding fuel.
I spent two days on the trip however, as I wanted more time to be able to stop at random places and take in the sights, explore and experience whatever I came across.
September should not be a problem for road closures, but you never have any guarantees. You never do with weather and traffic.
Last couple of times I used sixt.com instead of Hertz or Avis. Seemed to give better rates, though I didn’t do the one way option.
In any case choose a rental location away from the airports or major hotels. The ones “somewhere else in town” tend to cost less.
In the past (many years ago) I was able to do a one way rental cheap by asking for a car that that needed to be returned to the city I was going to. But that was a “walk up to the counter and ask what they had” kind of thing, nothing that could be planned ahead.
Hyre is a cheap and good option
