William Hill to pay record £19.2m for failings

  1. The gambling industry is a toxic cancer on our society.

WH were ‘lucky’ that their profits dropped massively during lockdown at about 9m for 2021. This was down 90% on 2020

The fine could have been much bigger.

    Do bet 365 next!

  2. I noticed an ad on T.V. the other day, with the gambleaware link at the end.

I noticed it had a little bit of text saying ‘Don’t chase losses’

Couldn’t help but think, this is a bit like a beer commercial telling alcoholics to ‘just have a quick one then stop’ – sure, it sounds reasonable, but it’s as effective as a fart in a hurricane…

    Detestable industry.

  3. Remember when bookies were a single shop per town affair, and not every other bloody store? Remember when constant gambling adverts weren’t plastered everywhere or blaring from every medium? Yeah, gambling is a fucking scourge on society. Providing absolutely nothing of value. Ban them from advertising, they’re no good for society.

  4. I had an account with them last year after getting “suspended” and my limits reduced at another bookmaker. £3000 deposit each month no questions asked, it was amazing. In about 6-7 months I depostied I think around £17000-19000, it was only December of last year that they finally put a limit and asked me to send in documents regarding my income there and then, which is a pain because I have to now edit 3 months of bank statements.

I’m banned from B365 because they couldn’t prove my income, I had a betting turnover there of around £2 million in 3 years (total bets placed not won/lost)… so moved over to SkyBet and BetFair and bet there until now I got limits there of £2000 and £1800. Not ideal but oh well.

Shame WH is gonna be stricter now, I enjoyed playing on their markets, they had some nice ones.

  5. Anyone know what ever happened to the loot boxes being looked at being banned in the UK?

Did it just get forgotten about? I know a big defense for it was it’s similar to the card collection books but I think that’s bad for kids. It just conditions people to keep on buying till you get what you want which is a kind of gamble.

  6. You don’t see cigarette adverts on TV, the same should apply for gambling companies. Their ads and sponsorship deals should also be banned from professional sports. While there is nothing wrong with a bet every now and again, we need to make it so that gambling and sport are not intrinsically linked, same with daytime TV and bingo websites. Gambling companies are parasites that need to be heavily regulated, not seen as part of everyday life.
