Terrorism conspiracy theories: belief among the UK public

  1. >One in seven (14%) say it’s definitely or probably true that the Manchester Arena bombing involved “crisis actors” who pretended to be injured or killed – but that people weren’t really injured or killed.

    >One in eight (13%) say it’s definitely or probably true that the 7/7 attacks in London were probably a hoax.

    >One in six (17%) believe it’s definitely or probably the case that attacks such as the Manchester Arena bombing and the 7/7 attacks in London did happen, but they were not carried out by terrorists.

  2. I expect this has all come about in recent years, fuelled by the COVID conspiracy theories that led people down rabbit holes due to the nature of social media algorithms. That is when conspiracy theories became much more mainstream, especially as people had plenty of hours to kill by browsing the internet. It is sad but you only have to look at /r/qanoncasualties to see how easy it for someone seemingly normal to get sucked into such a group and lose all sense of reality.

  3. Lol 659 adults sample size in a population the size of the UK. This whatever it is isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on.

  4. These are the same people who set fire to 5G towers and believe Bill Gates is implanting chips in you via the covid vaccine.

    Absolutely pointless people

  5. My mum, who has respiratory issues, now outright refuses to trust doctors or hospitals whatsoever. She’s convinced they are trying to kill all the elderly, no matter how much I reason with her it falls on completely deaf ears.

  6. I don’t think this is particularly new or imported from the US. And people bringing up QAnon really need to read the full article – it mentions belief in such conspiracy theories as much lower in older age groups – i.e. the kind of people who tend to become QAnon crackpots.

I remember seeing reporting after terror attacks in France about a lot of belief, especially amongst the Muslim community, that the attacks were carried out by the IDF as false flags or some such – and French efforts to fight against such conspiracies.

I think we are probably seeing the same thing here, a lot of young Muslims quite removed now from 7/7 and Manchester Arena who presumably believe it was some kind of Islamophobic plot.

Unfortunately the study doesn’t provide any further details to help us understand the figures.
