  1. Estonia is pretty stable or even growing most years. The estimations are largely based on past trends, which are pretty meaningless, considering how fast post-socialist economies have developed.

  2. What exactly does that mean? Less people living in the country or less citizens? Because certainly the amount of Bulgarians has risen a lot, in my neighborhood.

  3. This is a social problem; not economic.

If you think long term economically it makes sense to have at least 2 kids and then invest in them so that they can grow up and contribute to your retirement; at least that’s how people thought about it since ancient times. Of course, the housing problem is often brought up but in the old days people lived in 2 bedroom cottages with 3 generation of their family and had a dozen kids so it’s not really a valid “economic” excuse.

But nobody wants to live in said conditions because of how how society has changed. We value living space, having money to spend on things we want, and having free time. So I don’t get why governments treat this like a fixable issue when it’s really not.

  4. This also happened in 18th and 19th century, after a major decline then the growth became higher than ever in 20th Century.

  5. Excuse me for hijacking, but…

The population shrinking have seen as one of our largest problem to solve for many years now. Is it here there the AI and automation will come in handy, if we’re be regulate it properly, so it also gain the ordinary ppl?

And since this is about Europe. Should we try to go away from the globalization and try to be self sufficient, to able to go through with the needed regulations regarding AI?

  6. Luckily sub saharan Africa’s population is booming and desperate to come here so most European countries can look there in future to supplement the population.

  7. I wonder why Spain’s population is increasing so rapidly? During 20 years it has gained more than 7 million habitants from abroad. I think population growth is not good for Spain because we have no natural resources, have marginal geographical location and unemployment problem. If Spain is a country with smaller population like Sweden we’d have better quality of life. Even Andorra is richer than Spain because it has small population size.

  8. Polands population hit 40 million in 2022 which is the highest its been in history. We kind of fixed our population decline with Ukrainians.

  9. What can we do about it?)

Should we return some third-world practices to return to replacement rate?)

Though as a sad 20yo redditor I hardly can imagine what can government do to make me have kids in any foreseeable future 🙁

  10. Italian government be like: “uhm, thousands of freshly graduated Italians run away every year saying that the country revolves around old people, job market sucks and we think backword. Population is shrinking because of that too. What could we do about that? Oh, yeah… MORE BABIES!!!!”

It’s funny, as a guy who will leave as soon as possible

  11. Quoting those who are doing financially well in Poland “in future we might be fewer but we we’ll be of better quality, smarter will remain”. I hope your real estate portfolios will rot into worthless, cunts.

  12. I am triggered by the misuse of the word hemisphere which is a half of a sphere. WTF is the Eastern hemisphere supposed to be, Europe is not located on Mercury!

  13. Actually in Estonia we are experiencing population growth right now. Maybe it will change in the future though.

  14. We just see this in a negative way as it’s linked to economic decline. We should really rethink what is life about and take it as an opportunity to reset some of our beliefs and system centered on always more unsustainable growth
