Finland is now officially in Nato

  1. From Yle: “Finland has become a member of NATO – the country officially joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto (green) handed Finland’s accession document to Foreign Minister Antony Blinken.

With the handover, Finland became the 31st member of the North Atlantic defense alliance, NATO.

The country joined NATO at a ceremony held at the military alliance’s headquarters in Brussels.

At the end of the short ceremony, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Finland to NATO.”

  2. My grandfather, whose first memories of his life are my great grandfather leaving to fight the muscovite horde back in 1939. He also remembers hiding from the bombers. He has tear in his eyes and is now saying that finally WE WILL NEVER BE ALONE AGAIN!

    Thank you, our dear allies!

  3. Finally fully part of the west, this is where we belong. Also now giving our smaller Baltic brothers support from the north, while Poland got you from the west.

  4. Congrats. Feels weird in a way, seeing a country dropping neutrality after so long (Sweden even weirder), but either way…

also, can’t help but feel jealous as well

  5. Thank you so much dear friends. It’s almost unbelievable- we we’re so desperately trying to make allies before WW2 and we ended up alone. And now we’re here. So grateful.

Let’s not forget that Sweden has been on our side for so long. They helped immensely during winter war and it was not a coincidence they stayed neutral with us.

Never again alone. But on the other side, I’d like to think we’re good allies to have. As a nation we might not have social skills, or style, or smoothness, or regular serotonergic system what comes to mediating alcohol reward. Also we’re strangely fond of buckets and are obsessed about spending time in a sauna. But we keep our word and take care of our own.

  6. Genuinely huge moment for NATO and the world geopolitical situation in general. Russia suddenly has an enormous border with NATO, and a neighbour that was previously content to maintain careful non-involvement is now united against them. I’m fully expecting a lot of rhetoric from Russia about being “surrounded” by NATO now though, probably be used domestically to increase the amount of control the state has over people there.

  7. Finlandization is now officially dead and buried. Good riddance! And congratulations to Finland.

We are not far behind, hopefully.
