Sweden has expelled 1,100 British nationals since Brexit

  1. F**ing immigrants. Dont speak the local language. They are hooligans and steal our jobs. Here for benefits.

I am just remebeing their argments for Brexit.

  2. Sweden’s migration agency did not comment on the Eurostat data but said in relation to the withdrawal agreement the “most common” reasons for rejecting applications from Britons were “uncompleted applications, late applications without reasonable grounds and applicants not fulfilling the requirements for residence status”

  3. We should honestly not allow them to join NATO with how Sweden has been treating British nationals. Just look at the case of [Kathleen Poole, aged 74, she’s getting deported for not having a valid British passport… She has fucking Alzheimers.](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65180538) Sweden is an ugly country that has been breaking the Withdrawal Agreement and is almost certainly discriminating against British nationals. No country has deported as many British nationals as Sweden, how is that possible with only 20-30k Brits resident in the country as of 2019? It’s blatant racism and discrimination.

  4. >Under the withdrawal agreement signed by the UK and the EU, all EU nationals living lawfully in the UK and British citizens living in an EU or European Economic Area country before Brexit were entitled to stay in those countries for the remainder of their lives.

  5. The explanation is likely that Swedish politicians, as a reaction to 2015, have put great focus on expelling people who are in the country illegaly. So immigration authorities in Sweden, due to demands from the governments, are likely both stricter and more focused on the specific task of expelling illegal immigrants than authorities in other EU countries.

  6. At the cost of sounding emotionally distant, it sounds like countries like Sweden and Netherlands are following the law.

I find it hard to believe that these expats got no communication whatsoever about the change in their residence status from either UK or the host country.

Sounds more like cases where people failed to stay up to date on their residence status AND ignored official communications on the matter.

  7. Each one of them threatened with a can of surströmning that would be opened if they didn’t get on the plane! 🙂

  8. I find the xenophobic, almost racist rhetoric aimed at the British quite interesting.

I’m British and I voted to stay in the EU. Despite the propoganda the reasons and debate over Brexit was allot more than “we want an empire” or “kick the foreigners out.”

I had long debates with family members on both sides of the argument and it mostly came down to economic issues rather than xenophobia.

Consistently on this forum and others, I’ve seen more of a visceral xenophobia directed AT British people by Europeans than that directed at Europeans by British people.

  9. The people at the swedish department of migration have been heartless fuckers for at least the last 15 years, pressured by political opinion to pay no attention to mitigating circumstances.

While politicians have been stumbling between “oh noes. Open up your hearts” and “build fortress europe and get those immigrants out” the department of migration, being good little bureaucrats, have been busy building the most fortress europe-y fortress europe of subtle red tape.

Kathleen Poole is just the tip of the iceberg, although usually nobody gives a shit because it’s Iraqi, Iranians, Eritreans, Syrians etc.

Ukrainians got a pass because the government was quick to institute special rules for Ukrainian refugees. Probably not going to get such a pass now since there is no strong pro-british opinion in Sweden.

If you’re a british MP reading this (not that any MPs are likely to, so this is more of a rhetorical thing):

    1. Don’t appeal to heart. Swedish bureaucracy has no heart, they have rules. The department of migration in particular.
    2. Don’t try to get a special exception for Kathleen Poole. It’s illegal for swedish government to make exceptions for individuals, it can only make generalist policies. That approach is about as viable as taking down reinforced concrete walls with your forehead. Maybe you already know that and you’re just trying to milk this for political points. In which case, shame on you.
    3. The only way to get results is to take it to the EU court. You need to show that it was not reasonably possible for people like Kathleen Poole to follow the rules within the timeframe given and that it therefor is a breach of the brexit deal (or even a breach of the spirit of the brexit deal as laid out in the framework) and that swedish authorities violated EU rules by not applying an appropriate timeframe or were sufficiently transparent with how the new regulations would apply to british citizens.

P.S: Note that it is absolute truth that it’s against the law for swedish government authorities to comment on an ongoing case. They’re not allowed to discuss the case with anyone who isn’t either directly involved with processing the case or directly representing Kathleen Poole. Kathleen Poole’s representative though is free to publish anything sent to her as she’s a private individual and can do anything she wants with information that ends up in her hands (unless it’s under the stricter secrecy laws of state secrets).

  10. Our current government (which I regret voting for) got into power with the help of right wing populism using the typical anti immigration platform. This was a reaction to our last left leaning governments mismanagement of a very liberal immigration platform.

I assume this is a result of them doing all they can to enforce the deportation of as many “illegal immigrants” as possible. These are predominately going to be the immigrants from richer countries as our courts would block the deportation otherwise (as the whole Turkey, NATO thing has shown)

I don’t think this is any form of xenophobia against the Brit’s. In fact I seem to remember our two nations having especially cordial relations.

  11. So this is all bullshit i think.

In **total** Sweden deported 2,398 individuals in 2022. Nationality with the highest amount of deportations was Iraq with 181. The UK is not even in the top 10. Migration in total to the UK from Sweden was 910. There is no way that 1,100 Brits got expelled even with 2021 included.

  12. No problem for Sweden, they accept PKK terrorism supporters from Turkey. “Freedom of expression”

  13. Looks a lot like Sweden is under a wave of anti-immigration feeling and the authorities are pushing back on it by being total, complete, absolute sticklers about the rules.

So Britons not obbeying the rules to the letter are being caught alongside Syrians, Eritreans and so on.

For the ones who did had by themselves the full ability to comply and didn’t (so, not this lady but likely all of the rest), maybe they shouldn’t expect special treatment compared to immigrants from other places.

The only comparison that makes sense here is between the treatment of immigrants in Sweden from other origins and those from Britain. The comparison with the rest of Europe that many are making doesn’t really indicate discrimination against Britons, only that Sweden is cracking down hard and without exception on non-compliance by any immigrant and other countries are not.
