Activists deflate the tyres of 194 SUVs

  1. it is partly the fault of the market. The car manufacturers saw a rise in suv sales, suddenly all the segments are suv variants.

whats wrong with a polo or a corsa? if you have a large family get a minivan, oh wait, the minivan segment became an suv.

  2. i support the idea but not the actions … altho perhaps the teen in me does.
these SUV don’t fit in parking spots and end up on either the sidewalk (can’t pass with a wheelchair/stroller) or on the road (dmg mirror) what side do you think they take?

somehow i think a width regulation would be more beneficial then other things.

  3. Oh piss off with your “activism”. Normal people work their whole lives to be able to afford a nice car and then a bunch of misguided hypocrites come and vandalise your vehicle.

Go protest at a place where they really are a problem for the environment. An oil company, fast fashion brands, private plane hangars, etc. But those are too difficult targets for these brave activist I suppose.

Edit: I don’t care how many sad hipsters downvote me, I will die on this hill

  4. TIL deflating tires of 190 cars the size and weight of a Dacia Sandero and 4 cars the size and weight of a Dodge Ram is completely normal for some kind of people.

  5. Believe me I fucking hate suvs with all my heart, HOWEVER I do not support slashing normal civilians’ cars since it could be needed in case of an emergency. these people whose tires you’ve just slashed aren’t just magically going to have an enlightenment and understand why suvs are so bad.

if you want change, you have to cut the issue at its roots: make politicians understand that they have to pass new regulations that makes it so that selling suvs isnt so attractive anymore for car manufacturers. because they were the ones that made people fall in love with the idea of buying an suv through marketing campaigns, surely they can fix it now too.

  6. Seeing which comments got up and downvoted on this post made me realize that what people told me about this sub being more left/activist-leaning is true after all.

Can someone please explain why the majority of people approve of this type of behavior to mess with other people’s belongings? Why do these so-called activists not go to the car factories or the Wetstraat or somewhere else to complain to fight the root cause of this problem? You surely won’t get the average Joe on board with this climate activism stuff when this keeps happening to ordinary people.

  7. Doing this will not earn sympathy for their cause. It’s just a mild annoyance for the owners and it puts environmentalism in a bad daylight.

People often complain that SUV’s are too big and heavy for urban areas, and they are right. However, cars have been getting bigger and heavier every generation due to safety and environmental requirements. A new BMW 3 series is larger and heavier than my 20 year old 5 series. With that in mind, it’s not surprising that streets and parking spaces designed 20 yrs ago are becoming too cramped for even medium segment modern cars. In 10 years, u might not even be able to park a toyota corolla in the city anymore. SUV’s are just the first type of car to show this is becoming a problem.

The big new trend is to force feed the population with electric cars. Its gotten so crazy that they just decided to ban everything else by 2035. But electric cars are ***heavy***. The battery packs add a literal ton of mass to the car. The strain on the tires and the roads is increased significantly. This increases wear. Tire particles are becoming a silent killer. The EU is looking into finding a way to measure it. Roads will require to be reinforced ,and even then, they will wear faster than they did 10 years ago. Road maintenance costs will skyrocket in the future. This all indicates that vehicles should be taxed on the wear they cause. Thus, taxes should be based on their weight.

However, the government won’t do that since it puts electric cars at a disadvantage. They will wait until 2035. You will have no choice but to buy a heavy electric car then. But right before that, they will bravely introduce that weight-based road tax that you all have been begging for. Never mind that it screws you over as well when you buy a Kia Niro EV.

Not to mention, most EV’s and plug-in hybrids are SUV’s right now. The manufacturers just couldn’t fit the battery packs in any other type of chassis without designing a new one from scratch, which takes years and billions of euros to do. Activists complain that we dont transition to electric fast enough ,but when people find a way to do it relatively quickly, they get their tyres deflated and a threatening flyer on their windshield. Positive reinforcement, ya know.

Im sick and tired of people assuming they have the moral high ground. They think their goal justifies the means, which makes vandalism and harassment acceptable for them to use. But in the end, they just fuck it up for the rest of the group and make everyone look like an ass to the general public.

Let people be and get an actual democratic majority to support your plans instead of trying to force it.

  8. I get the hate against SUV’s but that doesn’t justify deflating people’s tires. Or to put it in other words: the goal doesn’t justify the means in this case (in my opinion).

  9. My dad has a pickup which he use for his professional activity, like delivering stuff etc

One day my sister take the pickup to move around, I think because we hadn’t bought the small car yet. And get the tire deflated by the same group as in the article.

Result she had to call a big ass tow-truck to inflate the tire as you can’t use a manual pump to do that. I don’t know how much the tow-truck consume but hey let’s deflate more tires right ?

  10. A big problem that is also overlooked is that many company cars are SUVs. I wouldn’t own an SUV if I hadn’t received one from my employer.

  11. One of my colleagues was one of the victims. His car is a hybrid. He comes to the office by public transport , the car is mainly for visiting clients. Anyway they cut his tire so he needed to buy new ones, really eco..

  12. I am not a fan of SUVs myself but I also do not condone the action here. It’s pure vandalism and while it may deliver the message, there’s a negative connotation to the message and the group behind that.

  13. I think the impact will be that SUV will be bought by those that can afford a garage and the heavy taxes. They will enjoy the freedom of travelling and being able to improvise their daily activities.

The middle class and poor people will have to use public transports, bicycles or small electric cars that limit their freedom and will force them to make plans before every move.

If you are in a car, you can just decide to stop by a store you are passing by and buy anything that fit in your boot. If you are on a bike or in public transport, you can’t enjoy such freedom anymore. Every move need to be planned. Improvisation is difficult.

For example if the store at your destination is closed, if you are in a car, it’s only a few minutes of driving to go to another. But if you have to bicycle to an alternative which is far, it may ruin your day. Sometimes it’s just impossible to reach in public transports (let’s say going from one IKEA to another because a product is out of stock).

So freedom for the rich. Shitty life for the others. Great future.

  14. If they don’t like SUV’s they are free to lobby their arguments and get them outlawed, either on the national level or in the EU. I’d even vote in favor of increasing safety standards so SUV’s will catch up to regular-sized cars in that aspect. But I don’t condone going around and slashing people’s tires. All you are going to do is piss people off without creating any actual change.

  15. Got mine slashed, not even driving a suv, nor living in Bruxelles. It messed a day of work and had to pay for a tow truck and new tires. Real climate friendly, jobless loosers
