I had to join just to let you all know that Finland and the Finnish people must be amazing if they came up with this wonderful beverage. It’s quickly becoming very popular here in Southern California.

Kippis!

  1. No better drink after sauna than a good ‘ol lonkero, kippis.

On another note, I miss SoCal, need to visit again sometime. San Diego nightlife was something else.

  2. For a bit of trivia, the 1952 Olympics also had another options of long drink, one made with brandy + Pommac. If you ever visit Finland, you will see this and many other flavours of long drinks today.

Pommac is an old Swedish soft drink made with grapes and apples etc., aged in oak barrels for >3 months, so it has quite a distinct taste. It was also sold by Dr. Pepper in the US for a limited run between 1963 – 1969.

  3. I tried this stuff and wasn’t blown away. I found that the easiest DIY version here in California is 1 can Pellegrino grapefruit soda (surprisingly Amazon sometimes has the best price) with 1.5 shots of Trader Joe’s gin.

Still not as good as Hartwall but cheaper than the RTD options here and I think better.

  4. I was finding real Hartwall Original in 6 packs at some of the Raley’s stores in the SF Bay Area and along the I-5 corridor last fall when a family emergency took me there. Couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it. Think I paid like $12-13 + CR-V + sales tax.

I bought every six pack I could find and brought them to Oregon.

  5. They were selling it for 8€ a can at Tuska last year and I still had like 25 of these over 3 days. Fucking scam, but couldn’t have enough of it.

  6. Made in Utica NY – they are using the Saranac / Utica Club brewery production line… Not bad, but not as good as Hartwall….

  7. I dunno if it’s available in the US, but if you can get your hands on Kyrö lonkero, I suggest you aim that hands towards your mouth. Best tentacle I’ve tasted in ages.
