Fans banned from wearing 70s ‘Afro wigs’ at ABBA Voyage

  1. Hey I saw Undercover Brother(2004), nothing wrong with Afro wigs, that was the culture back then in the 1970’s, might as well ban bellbottoms then also

  2. Are black people allowed to straighten or colour their hair, or wear wigs to achieve a similar effect, or is that cultural appropriation of white people?

Or this yet another example of those modern, funny things that only seem to work one way?

  3. Genuine question… Is it culturally sensitive? I’ve seen pictures of white people in the 70s with curly hair and that hair style. They weren’t wigs from what I could tell.

I thought it was just the style at the time…

  4. Before reading the article I assumed the ban was over fire safety. Lol!

I imagine also that attending a concert and the person in front has really high hair that might be quite annoying.

I think the cultural sensitivity excuse is likely just that. Or a misunderstanding.

  5. Today I learned that white people can’t have tightly curled hair that can be grown into an ‘afro’ naturally…oh wait, yes they can! White people can naturally have type 4 hair. Dark skinned people can naturally have type 1 hair. Stupid shit than only a few loud individuals care about.

  6. At least the people behind these wig wearing disco fans will be able to see the stage because of this ban.

  7. why does anyone care about some stupid rule at a virtual abba concert? the whole thing sounds idiotic just don’t go, problem solved. whiners

  8. There’s going to be a breaking point for all this utter shite. These misguided people are going to end up doing more harm than good.

  9. Let`s just cut to the chase and just ban everything and everyone. That`s the end game afterall. Always be something else to whinge about won`t there? It will never stop til we stop feeding the monster that is the do gooder brigade.

  10. Having been, I think it’s because they can block the view. You’re not allowed to wear anything with flashing lights either as it can ‘distract people’.
It’s a fantastic show but the dance floor area is PACKED. Anything remotely large at head hight would be incredibly unfortunate for people behind.

  11. Has anyone, like, ASKED African / Afro-Caribbean people what they think about this?

I know my mother had a stage where she had her hair permed into an afro, would this be insensitive? Heck, I’m a cybergoth so wear plastic dreadlocks sometimes, and the only response I have had from members of the Black community have been positive.

By issuing this ban, particularly if Black voices have not been heard, is it actually sterotyping against Black people?

I’m more than willing to be educated on this topic.

  12. I used to have a fairly senior role working on ABBA Voyage. It was felt by some members of staff that having Afro wigs as ‘fancy dress’ was culturally insensitive so we asked audience members to stop wearing them. That was it. We just wanted people working on the show to feel comfortable at work. We had a way to make that happen so introduced this rule. How this is news 10 months after we opened is crazy to me. We had very, very little backlash from people who wore them and who we asked to remove them if they did show up wearing one. We had a stock of other wigs they could pick a replacement from for free. If I can do something to make the staff I work with more comfortable coming to work then I am absolutely going to do that.

I left a couple of months ago but as an aside, you should all go and see the show as it really is a great night out.

  13. Am I going mad right now?!?

Look at who has posted this… u/TheTelegraph

No one has been banned from wearing an Afro wig. No one has thought about ABBA seriously in quite a while. This is a nothing story.

    Yet it takes off.

We cannot escape, can we? The Murdoch Press is ‘apparently too popular’…….

  14. I think you’ll find the people who care most about this “cultural appropriation” nonsense aren’t even black.

I am and I couldn’t give a toss if a non-black person wears an afro wig. Why the hell not? It’s fun to dress up.

  15. The old cultural appropriation thing is really grasping at straws now aren’t they. They’re all the way down the list at abba gigs? They can’t have much left now

  16. If you give even an ounce of care about this piss called “cultural appropriation”, you need to stay indoors. I’ll do what I want with my hair. My body my rules. Stop being racist towards white people. Disgusting humans.
