We used to get fruit that had been sitting on a radiator all day. Does that count as a hot meal?
Soup is the easiest solution to this. Healthy and easy for schools to make if needed.
Not sure why the burden of childcare consistently being passed from parents to the state is seen as a good thing by this sub
No. Why should I pay for the meals of kids whose parents can afford it?
I went to a school in an area classed as disadvantaged and there was a time when students got vouchers for lunch I think 2 or 3 times a week. That would be better than every single schoolchild in the country getting it.
Can’t see this becoming a reality. So many schools are so entrenched in past and stuck in old buildings and older mindsets. Access to education beyond certain basic criteria is so hard; if you don’t want to learn through Catholicism, or maybe you want to learn through gaeilge, if you are dyslexic or Autistic or having additional physical or medical requirements then good luck to you trying to get access to the education that your kid needs. They can’t teach all of our kids adequately in suitable school buildings, no way they can organise their shit in order to feed them all a hot meal too.
Is it Aramark calling for this, lobbying Heather Humphries?
What going to happen with schools that don’t have a kitchen
A lot of kids don’t need this and get far too much these days from tablets, iPhones, fortnight games etc , to actually appreciate a hot meal.
Give kids cards, that can be used in school canteens. They can be topped up so everyone has a currency on the card. Those disadvantaged kids can have cards discreetly programmed to get free meals while those who are not can use the cards and top up at a PAYG terminal.
Starting in the Deis schools with the intention to spread it through all schools. Excellent
>Every child in a Deis primary school will get a hot meal from September, Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys will announce today, alongside a pledge to “strongly support” a target of a free hot school meal for every child by 2030.
>
>She will also detail plans to begin expanding hot meals to non-Deis primary schools from 2024 and to increase rates paid to catering companies providing school meals – for the first time since the scheme started in 2003.
>
>Deis schools, which are mainly in poorer areas, support children who are at risk of or who are experiencing educational disadvantage.
>
>The announcement comes as a report, published today, finds the free hot meal is for some children the only hot food they get all day.

We used to get milk cartons in school. One day I ask for two and got tutting as a response.
Straight up some Oliver Twist shit. Even if you’re super right wing economically giving kids meals in school is a very good idea for a bunch of reasons. It costs so little for the massive benefit it brings to the exact people who can’t ‘pull themselves up by their bootstraps’. No children should be hungry — especially given the amount of food we waste.
If there’s one thing Japanese schools do well, it’s their lunch programme. We should easily be able to do something similar to that here, at least in the more urban areas via dedicated centralised kitchens.
This is a bit of a no-brainer, there is a huge benefit from ensuring that children get fed in school that has been seen in other countries. I could rant on about how this will be a great way to shape our attitudes to food to a more social way.
I could rant on how this is a great cost saver to families with children and to society as a whole (provided it is well run and we benefit from the economies of scale).
What annoys me however is that the minister underlines how important this is, and then kicks the project 7 years down the road. If you were serious about this, you could have it in place next year.
by 2030…. I mean Im no politician but that time scale seems crazy long to me.
I could have done with that.
And breakfast too.
When your home life is a bit of a mess this would be seriously helpful to a lot of young kids.
Especially those now living in hotels and hostels.
I can’t believe people have a problem with this. Literally what’s the downside? If this is where some of my tax goes, I’d be delighted.
This is a good thing.
Well past due.
This would be a great initiative. I’d say the amount of children who don’t get one nutritious meal a day is probably very high.
Good opportunity to teach kids about nutrition too and of course takes a little pressure of parents.
My only concern with this is who will be ensuring that the meals are actually nutritious?
How do we know that whatever caterer is supplying the foods isn’t putting 2lbs of butter in with the mashed potatoes? Who will ensure that half of the meal is vegetables?
serious question but why the fascination with a hot meal? Does a cold meal (sandwich, wrap, salad, fruit, etc…) not work?
Would be great to have a hot meal included in the price of afterschool homework clubs too
Parents should provide meals for their children.
My school had hot buns and very cold milk cartons delivered everyday in 1999/2000.
Sure it’s not a nutritious hot meal, which I agree should be provided, but I always looked forward to it. Just a little joy in the day.
Was a shame when they stopped.
This is a great scheme. Should be funded by a levy on drink and fags too
It would actually have been so class to have a hot meal served in school when I was there. We would likely not have afforded it but that’s class to have something on a Friday or similar
Teachers will prob threaten a strike.
Primary school I went to is now a deis school that my nieces attend. They have a full menu they can choose from and my sister just goes online and changes their order if they want something different. It’s really a wonderful thing, delighted it’s being rolled out further. During covid, food parcels were delivered to every student’s house too. Cornflakes, 1kg pasta etc.
When I was in the school (90s), the school secretary bought 2 sliced pans and slices of luncheon to make sandwiches, cut them into 4 squares and went around to classrooms for kids who didn’t have lunch. There’d never be any left over. Teachers often gave some of their own lunches too. I’m delighted no child will be hungry in school.
It’ll be outssourced and privatised after ten years. It’ll be charged soon after
The ones that don’t keep their account in order get microwaved nutraloaf.
I remember when I was in primary school during 80s we used to get milk and Raisin Buns. On a Friday you would get strawberry milk, it was lovely.
I’m all for hot meals, clearly it wasn’t a concern for the great minds during my day..
Edit.
God I just read this…..I’m soooo Old…
Could be a good idea but they’ll find some way to screw i up you can be guaranteed of that. Let’s see how many brown envelopes get slipped and to which TD’s brother in law’s cousin the contracts start going to at 50% markup.
As none of them are expected to have kitchens it makes sense.
