>Germany’s IG Metall (IGM), Europe’s largest industrial union, is calling for a four-day work week at their current salary rather than a pay raise for the country’s metalworkers ahead of collective bargaining negotiations this November.
Very interesting turn of events and a subject that is constantly under discussion in the EU atm.
Wow, I heard a lot discussion about a 4 day week, but with IGM really pushing for it, the thing becomes serious.
Previously, I was part of IGM company and this move doesn’t inspire much confidence. In the future, people will work for 4 days and employers will drive wages further down to make record profits. I’m for a 4-day work week. I’m against using it as a tool to pay less. The current “pay at current salary isn’t enough”. It’s easy to reset the base given the current economic climate. So unless there’s a clear framework for salary increases in the future – I will continue to be skeptical.
I would suggest instead of a 4-day week, we increase vacation by 40-45 days a year and allow employees to take it flexibly. If someone wants to take 1 day per week, the law should allow it.
