Wexford woman on the pitfalls of job hunting – ‘I’m in my thirties and I have never had a job’

  1. ““I have been looking for a job for years and years but no employer has given me a chance. They are all looking for four or five years experience. I’ve sent out hundreds, if not thousands of CVs.”

Yeah I’m calling bullshit on this one

  2. Probably more going on there than is in the article.

Could everyone please stop saying FETAC (don’t know if that’s from the woman or the reporter) – it has been QQI for over 10 years now, so most of the time she’s been doing her courses. It’s not mentioned but several QQI courses come with a short period of work experience, so maybe she should concentrate on those ones.

  3. We are at basically full employment.

If she can’t get a job and has never had one before it’s most likely her own fault.

    What a stupid article.

  4. Plenty of work out there. What I think she means is she can’t get work in the areas that she wants to work.

  5. What kind of waffle article did I just read?? The independent is really a low level rag.

“Me look for job but no find job!”

No details on industry, location. Amount of replies or interviews. Unemployment rate here is at a 20 year record low level of 4.3%. Finding a job is not hard unless you have donkey brains

  6. Feels like there’s info being left out here, takes some work to get to 30 and to never have a job.

Suppose we’re here talking about it after having clicked on the article so job done as far as The Independent is concerned.

  7. I really hate to be a asshole here but I gotta say this must be her fault. You dont go +10 years actually looking for a job and getting no interviews. Either her CV is awful, she’s applying for the wrong jobs, or insisting on jobs shes not qualified for.

also 100s of cvs over 10+ years? whats that average of 10 cvs out a year 😀 ok 100s isn’t a exact number but if it’s 10 a year or a month it’s not that many. I absolutely symphitise here as after school i couldn’t find a job for a long time, but that was also in 2008. Eventually change of attitude, upgrade skill set and some real effort and writing CVs targeted at a specific job changed that.

Or maybe she’s getting as far as interview and its just really obvious shes someone you really don’t want to work with,.

  8. Jesus, the Independent isn’t even vaguely pretending to be a serious news source anymore. Unless the person has some limiting condition to make her unsuitable for work then, she should have been able to find something in 10 years. Either her search parameters are too low or her expectations are too high.

  9. I left school in 1995. I’ve been out of work for two weeks since then. I worked whatever crappy jobs were available until I found a job that didn’t suck. I can’t believe someone could go that long without work if they were willing to do whatever it takes to get any job going.

  10. You have to actually try to *not* get a job if you’ve never had a job at 30, unless you’re physically or mentally disabled or something. But even for the physically disabled there are work from home gigs now.

  11. >A Co Wexford woman who cannot find work despite sending out hundreds of CVs has appealed to employers to give people a chance.

They do give people a chance, it’s called submitting your CV and then interviews. It’s not like employers are advertising for jobs and then not hiring anyone or interviewing anyone.

And I don’t think taking to national and local media to highlight her plight will help here considering she’s basically letting everyone know she’s been on the dole for 10 years and no one has viewed her as employable in that time.

  12. Clearly looking for jobs she’s unqualified for and has the false impression you can jump in at a higher level cause she’s older.

You start at the bottom when you have no experience and you work your way up.

Granted, the prolonged period with no work would definitely be off putting to hiring managers.

  13. She never thought to walk into a pub or restaurant or a hair salon and ask the manager for a few hours? Absolute shite talk. She wouldn’t work on batteries.

  14. Bollocks. It’s literally the best time it’s ever been to find a job. We don’t realise how lucky we have it.

If you can’t find a job doing exactly what you want, then you get a temporary job in your local shop / restaurant/ pub, and continue your job search on evenings and weekends. That’s what everyone else does.

She’s living at home, so she’ll save all that money, and can buy a car or move to an urban area with more jobs.

She needs a bit of straight talking. She’s never had a job because she thinks she’s too good to work for entry-level jobs

  15. I’m on the job hunt currently. Have sent out maybe 10 CVs and have two interviews lined yp. Applying for jobs online I’ve never once seen 4-5 year’s experience required, and I work in an industry where experience is really sought after. 1-2 years is usually the standard for experience required.

I sympathise with this woman though. A few years ago I was unemployed for about 10 months and it was miserable.

  16. Missing reasons in this article. What’s her CV like, what were her courses in, did she do work experience for her courses, what is she applying for, is there a medical or mental health issue that’s putting employers off?

  17. Doesn’t drive, never had a boyfriend, there is a lot more going on here than unemployment. I feel very sorry for her.

  18. Calling BS on the article. There are jobs if you are willing to work. Without prior experience you’ll have to drop any notions and get an entry level job. Simple as.

Also, how does someone like this get an article in the indo? I’m always baffled by stories like this. Some random Joe Soap with a personal crisis, and they’ve linked up with Journalist to get their story printed.

  19. I managed to find a job as a waiter in a pub with 0 job experience after being to sick to work until that point.

Walked into the pub and asked if I could drop in my CV
I got told that if I was willing to work hard I could have a trial the next day and see how I got on. A few weeks later, I got told I had a nice speaking voice so my manager decided to give me a chance based on that 😅.

Worked there over the summer, loved every second of it and left with a glowing reference.

I was lucky I will admit, but if I can get hired because my voice is nice, she can find a job within a 10 year period. She clearly doesn’t want to get hired.

  20. I feel like this is like, engagement baiting from The Independent, and well I guess it worked on me 🙄

    Very strange article.

  21. In her 30s and never had a job? I am in my late 60s and never without a job since I was 21. She needs to get into the real world.

  22. I don’t believe this at all. Not for a minute. How did this even get a write up. Did she send him an email or something and he thought “scoop of the century”. How can we believe this? Where the proof she’s not just a contrary fucker? Gowaaaay.
