Major incident declared after oil leak in Dorset

  1. >The leak has come from the Wytch Farm facility in the Purbecks which is one of the largest onshore oil fields in Europe.
Oil has escaped into the water and surrounding area, Philip Broadhead, the leader of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council has confirmed.

£5 says a review will find they knew of issues/lack of maintenance before this….

  2. Our coastline and beaches are lovely and teeming with wildlife. An oil spill here is going to destroy all that and will take years to clean up properly. It’s disgusting but nothing will be learned from it as a result. While not the Deepwater Horizon incident, it will be a case of “We’re sorry!” and nothing else will come from it.

  3. Government: How dare you, how did this happen?

Wytch Farm Facility: We neglected maintenance and cut costs to increase our profit margins.

Government: How dare you, we will fine you 20% of your profits.

Wytch Farm Facility: Yeah no probs lol.

  4. Not good at all. Hopefully it can be mitigated easily.

There must be a way to ensure that the taxpayer doesn’t end up paying for the cleanup. Of course this government like to nationalise losses, so it won’t happen.

  5. Having worked in the industry a while back for a bit I can assure you that 200 barrels reported likely means at least 10 times that.

  6. I work in the industry. Perenco’s safety record in Africa should of disqualified them from operating this asset.

Also, as a “family owned” business, they don’t report to the same standards as a listed company would.

  7. Well that’s all the sailing on and enjoyment of the Solent gone this spring, summer, till 2033 and beyond.

Irresponsible motherfuckers. Get em to clean it up then shoot the lot of them.

  8. The amount of money and maintenance that goes into the infrastructure I just don’t see how this can happen without some serious failures.

  9. I’m sure those responsible can be sued under Tort law for the loss of habitat, on behalf of those suffering as a result of pollution and contamination, or the worries about poisoned water sources/land/birds/fish etc.

  10. I live overlooking Poole Harbour and see so many lovely seabirds and marine life on a daily basis. Breaks my heart to think of what will happen to them.

  11. BBC were spinning hard for the firm involved on lunchtime news there, didn’t hear any independent analysis of what was going on and only got a statement from the company involved.
