Hey r/Switzerland ! As someone who enjoys learning more about different cultures, I wish to create a Spotify playlist that includes songs from as many countries in the world as possible, and I need your help. List some timeless classics that define Switzerland culturally, and I will add the 5 most upvoted ones to the playlist.

Some soft rules:

• Submit songs that people actually listen to – preferably don’t include ceremonial songs only played at special occasions

• Limit of 2 songs per each singer

• Try not to repeat an already submitted song – if you find that someone mentioned the song you wanted to submit, upvote the comment to increase its visibility

Nr. of countries added so far – 29

  1. You will hear vastly different answers based on each person’s age and background here. Especially since Switzerland never had a massive, internationally recognized singer/band that would serve as an easy answer. Closest to this would probably be DJ Antoine, Eluveitie or DJ Bobo, I guess.

Anyway, this is a list of songs that stand out in popularity, excluding others already mentioned (Mani Matter, mostly).

90’s Pop – DJ Bobo, “Freedom”

    00’s Pop – Bligg, “Rosalie”

2010’s Pop – DJ Antoine, “St. Tropez”

Modern-ish Traditional – Oesch’s die Dritten (no idea about specific songs)

All of them are mostly just popular with some larger demographics but not really culturally important and there’s obviously a heavy german-speaking slant. Less popular, but definitely more impactful would be something like “Siemis” by Liricas Analas, which brought rumantsch culture back to the forefront of the Swiss consciousness, at least for a bit.

There’s also a bunch of metal stuff that is surprisingly influential to their genres like Celtic Frost or Eluveitie, but due to metal being very niche in Switzerland they are not all that impactful culturally within Switzerland.

  2. Dört ähne am Bärgli…

Wenn numme wüsst was Vogeliisi …

    S’Elfiglöggli lüttet scho…

  3. It’s not a song but to me the best story culturally.
Because many words are totally made up yet everyone understands the story 🤣

    Ds Totemügerli by Franz Hohler

  4. Some of my favorites. I’m afraid a lot of Swiss German music won’t work for an international audience because they can’t understand the lyrics…

    Plüsch – Heimweh

Züri West – Fingt ds Glück eim?

Gölä – I Hätt No Viu Blöder Ta

    Patent Ochsner – Ausklaar

    Dodo – Hippie-Bus

  5. Well there isn’t one. At least each linguistic region has a different one and some region might not agree at all.

I vote for Le Ranz des Vaches

  6. – Heimweh by Plüsch

However generally i’d say it very much depends on the region you’re looking at — due to us having four major languages a song in one language might be highly popular in one region but not known at all in a different one

As you got quite a bit of ‘older’ songs these here would be a couple of newer ones:
    – Zürimaa and/or Hippiebus by Dodo (swiss
    german region)
    – Singulier by KT Gorique (french region)
    – hai eu less by ME + MARIE (rumantsch region)
    – any of the top songs by ‘bligg’ (swiss german)
    – ke bock by nemo

And due to the lyrics i’d like to include ‘mini stadt?’ By fratelli-b

To add: newer swiss music is very often in different languages (mostly in english as in old again by zian or any stefanie heinzmann songs, but sometimes even spanish as in songs by loco escrito), however i don’t know whether this is something you’re looking for as well?
