if only there was someway we could massively increase tax revenue and take back a large portion of power and cash from the gangs and take at least a small amount of pressure off the health service.

  1. I feel like there’s gotta be some kind of magic solution we aren’t thinking of.

Something we could use the revenue from to fix things like the HSE.

  2. In a legal world, would this subreddit be filled with photos of joints instead of pints of Guinness?

  3. If only everyone on earth had a perfect example of what happens when you ban a safe, reliable, recreational substance, and relegate it to criminals only. Why would we PROHIBITION that?

  4. How will it take pressure off the health service?

The psychiatric repercussions will outweigh any benefits.

  5. I don’t think the tax revenue would be as high as people think. I do think it should be legal though.

  6. >massively increase tax revenue

We collected 83 billion in tax in 2022.

What amount do you think we would take in after all the costs from legalised weed?

  7. If weed becomes legal and taxes heavily enough to ‘massively increase’ tax revenue, the first thing that will happen is people will be on this sub asking why weed is so expensive and that it shouldn’t be taxed at all.

  8. Careful what you wish for

I think governments are seeing that it’s easier to ignore the problem than properly resource and fund a response.

  9. Don’t forget a massive boost to the tourism industry!

40 shades of Green, the copy writes itself like.

We can take all the weed tourists from Amsterdam, they don’t want them anymore.

  10. But that would eat up pharmaceutical profits and vintners profits!

Oh wont someone think about the big corporate lobbyists!

  11. If Ireland makes it legal it will end up messy like Thailand with weed shops everywhere and guys selling it out of vans . I’m not for or against it.

  12. As a non cannabis smoker and pure observers of only 5 users, my view is decriminalise and have it regulated but not a fucking tourist attraction.
I’m not a lover of the smell of weed or even regular smoke for that matter but of the 5 I know. They are wasters. Full of the aspirations in life when smoking it and never doing a thing about them the next day. And all 5 blame their failures in other people success ( from hard work and action). I’ve yet to see if any of the 5 will hit the point to give up and act or even to strike the balance that I can’t see could exist. From the 5 alone.

  13. I’m all for it and i dont even smoke it, and I know in some states in the US it brought in huge money.

Do we have any idea what kind of tax revenue it would bring here? Is it possible to get any kind of accurate forecast?

  14. I’m not disputing the principle of legalisation. But the argument that tax revenue or increased government power will naturally turn into something beneficial just shows how abusive our psychological relationship is with our shit governments. Mildly increasing tax payments to government won’t make anything better, they will fuck up the investment of any additional revenue like they fuck up everything else. Moreover, the government will then not only be responsible for any mental health problems caused by cannabis abuse, but also profiting off them

  15. I heard rumours a few years back that Bird na Mona – one of the biggest landowners in the country – are moving into the world of both agricultural and pharmaceutical hemp production. So, only a matter of time…

  16. If it were to become legal, it should only be legal in special designated areas. Like special cafés, or in private property. People who don’t want to be around that stuff shouldn’t have to be.

  17. It might be wiser to wait for Fine Gael to fuck off as they would probably find some way of selling drug users to scientology or something mad so it doesn’t interfere with their war on drugs and funding NI gangs.

  18. True but don’t expect mom and pop operations, it will quickly be took over by big companies to run. Security is an issue, farmers in the UK who grow hemp have a terrible time with the not too bright breaking into fields.

  19. I don’t live in Ireland. Can someone explain to me how weed is handled there? Is it legal to smoke but illegal to buy etc..
