Mahatma Gandhi said: ‘The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members’. The government and Independent TDs who voted to deliberately make people homeless today are nothing short of despicable. Shame on all of you. – Liam Cunningham

  1. Ghandi was a fucking pervert towards his young female relatives. When he was in his late 70s he used make his teenage grand niece sleep naked in his bed. He didn’t treat vulnerable members of own family well ffs

  2. Shame on him for joining the easy bandwagon of internet judgement and moral point scoring. People aren’t going to offer places to rent if you take away their control of their own property – specifically, their freedom to sell it on the open market without a sitting tenant.

If we don’t want to rely on private people offering their houses for rent to the public then let’s build public housing. But don’t think we can magically convert a private house into public housing just because we really, really wish we had built more public housing. This magical wishing is for political infants, and it is driving private landlords away and making the crisis worse.

What has to be done is to reverse the trend of landlords leaving the market. Tax rental income, registered with the ptrb at 20% no matter if the person is being taxed at the higher rate elsewhere. Keep taxing Airbnb income at the higher rate to create an incentive to let out places longer term. Enact the change that allows fair deal residents to take all the income from renting out their empty property (taxed at 20% like any landlord). And only have an eviction ban in the winter months from now on.

  3. Sick of these “intellectuals” masquerading as economists/politicians. Liam, do your movies/plays and shut up.

  4. The question is, will more people be homeless in the long run if the eviction ban is kept in place. I don’t see any discussion on this.

  5. Just to play devil’s advocate, the Irish government provides very generous support for people on low incomes. You can get €200 per week for an unlimited amount of time, free healthcare, free accommodation, free childcare, free education, etc.

If you’re homeless the government will pay for you to stay in a hotel. Rough sleeping is different, because many people have drug addictions and / or mental health issues, and choose not to take free accommodation. However, homeless people that are not rough sleepers get looked after.
