Far-right Finns Party moves to ECR group in EU Parliament. Party decides to join a group that supports ‘the uncompromising defense of Western civilization and the European security architecture.’ The far-right Finns Party has decided to leave the nationalist Identity and Democracy (ID) group

> The “radical change in Finland’s security policy” caused by the Russia’s war on Ukraine led the party to “reexamine international cooperation networks,” the party’s statement reads.
Petty nationalism isn’t sustainable in the real world. Who would’ve thought?
In a world of big power conflicts only Europe provides sovereignty
ECR has been accepting many such parties, recently. They’re thus moving more and more to the extremes. One has to wonder how much longer the more moderate member parties are willing to be associated with those extremes that found their ideological home in ID.
That’s a sensible decision.
How many seats does the ECR gain by this move?
Far-right isn’t accurate imo.
So if I’m understanding this properly, the Finns party changed their advocacy from a FIXIT separation from the EU to move only the EEA, to a more “EU is fine but we need to stop further integration and challenge immigration” mindset?
Maybe a first step to become an acceptable government party. Finns only quitted ECR in 2019 to go ID. Now they return. ECR is EU critical enough to fit Finns basic needs but still acceptable enough to contain parties that are on a national level governing like FdI in Italy and PiS in Poland. Or have been part of a government like N-VA in Belgium. You might not like them but they are established entities with democratic mandate. The ID group are a bit more troublesome on their political ideas. Especially the taint of ID being pro Russia might be the foremost reason.
They aren’t far right.
Rn Ukraine is defending our freedom. How does that make any sense?
They honestly are hardly far-right. Lukewarm nationalist-conservative/populist I’d say.
They are not far-right party 🤦♂️ Just right-wing party. Here we see far-right partys openly rasist, almost like KKK.
What exactly makes them so “far” right?
the Means vs the Ends
Kind of shitty to do the change 3 days after a major election. Given, it was a national election and this is EU, but still not the most honest way of going about it.
Defense of western civilization.
So they’ll be anti immigration going forward I hope…?
Finnish politics is interesting. What makes them far-right? I was expecting a more Finexit from the EU type of rhetoric.
So I guess instead of “keep Finland white” their new objective is to “keep Europe white”…
“far-right” lmao. If people keep using this word as a buzzword for nationalist parties that they don’t like, then the real far-right people will start coming in. Get a clue..
I really don’t like bias like this in news headlines. I dislike the party, and they are pretty far to the right, but not in the extreme that they are “far-right”. I really don’t see how grouping them together with real far-right parties helps anyone… Sometimes I wish people on reddit knew better than this. Thankfully the majority of people knows what’s true or not though.
