Language issues are co-opted to become political point scoring, from both sides. It’s just another feature of the ongoing situation but neither side are able to suggest a path to resolution or to demonstrate any compromise.
It is a pity that both the main Unionist parties and Sinn Fein have a vested interest in maintaining polarisation. It is bad for N. Ireland overall but good for getting voters worked up. As a testament to their lack of commitment to democracy Sinn Fein won’t take their seats in Westminster and the DUP won’t take their seats under a Sinn Fein Stormont.
It is a pity that the people of N. Ireland do not have better politicians to represent them.
The demographics are moving away from a protestant majority, for the first time in the history of N. Ireland. But of course the protestant majority was built in from the beginning with the selection of the boundaries. Historically the protestant majority worked for one part of the community and very much against the other part of the community.
The DUP wanted out of the EU – job done. Now my suspicion is that they see a chance to get a hard border back. If so then that is a risky move, fortunately it is not up to the DUP.
I have read a number of reports that say the chances of a united Ireland are declining. The Republic sees no real attraction to taking on N. Ireland and its issues, while the younger generation in N. Ireland have more important things to worry about than striving for a united island. I wonder if being part of the EU has taught them that states and borders are not the be all and end all?

Getting g triggered by a sign and using the villagers logic that irish signs shouldn’t be in protestant villages . Does that mean by extension English language signs shouldn’t be in Catholic villages.
First, there’s no such thing as a “Protestant village.” Second, Irish is the original language of the island of Ireland, which includes the portion of the island currently occupied by a foreign power. These people speak Irish every time they mention the name of their village. Who in the name of God do these squatters think they are?
This is what I really don’t get about the religious. They fight the most with beliefs closest to their own.
It was only the other day I learned the Taliban and ISIS love to shoot each other, for example.
They are never going to grow up, are they? Being triggered by the use of another language is weird.
That should be treated both as a hate crime and a human rights violation. And the DUP should be declared a terrorist organisation, because they are clearly complicit.
Born in Ireland – not Irish.
Despise all things Irish – insist on living in Ireland.
These people are bigoted imbeciles.
To think, how much easier life would be today had we been nicer to the Irish hundreds of years ago
I support a United Ireland, however let’s be clear both Shinners & the DUP arseholes use language as a stick for their aims. Both have a vested interest in polarising society
Hateful people. Big fans of cultural genocide clearly.
Some of the poorer Protestant communities in Northern Ireland have a life expectancy in line with Sierra Leone, yet rather than deal with real issues of poverty and disadvantage, their community leaders have convinced them to bang on about this inconsequential shite.
Imagine being so ashamed of your own language and culture that you pull this stunt.
It’s 2023 you backwards cunts. The signs won’t hurt you unless you touch them and start singing IRA songs
Do they not have other more serious and important things to be dealing with like severe poverty? You know, rather than being caught up in getting upset at the historical 2,500 year old language of the country in which they live?
A typical unionist response to everything, fly a fleg lol
This is like the council in London who spent 50k changing the name of ‘black boy lane’ even though none of the black residents objected to it.
I don’t understand. People in Wales don’t have a problem with using the Welsh language and being part of the UK. So what’s wrong with unionists using Irish? They ARE in Ireland.
This is why Northern Ireland isn’t really Irish. Its just British occupation that’s gone on for too long.
The thing which doesn’t sit right with me is this. The furthest North point on a map of the island of Ireland is part of the Republic of Ireland. To my mind that invalidates the name Northern Ireland. Maybe it should be North East Ireland? Or maybe they should pick a nice fluffy name similar to the Christmas Islands. Or get a corporate sponsor? Vodafone Ireland?
How petty and small minded. Do these people not have bigger issues?
Tribalism like this (on both sides) has no place in modern society.
I love reading English opinions on Ireland. Yes, hook it into my veins.
Here we go again with this lot.
They hate Irish things but live on the island of Ireland…
Unionists should really consider moving back to Scotland as it’s very similar 😄

maybe put all the signs in ogham and they all think its just pretty patterns
everyone gets what they asked for and still arent happy
The signs should be just in Fingallian as a compromise, as long as the residents promise to learn it.
