Jason Smyth announced his retirement today. He was never beaten in the 100 metres across four Paralympics and at nine European championships. Throwback to his finest moment at London in 2012 when he blew all competitors away and set a new world record of 10.46, his speed is unreal

  1. Amazing! Ashamed to say I wasn’t aware of him until now.

For anyone else who is wondering T13 is the category for people with low vision in both eyes. Guides are not allowed.

  2. How many elite level T13 sprinters are there ?

I’d imagine very few and judging by some of the margins he won by the standard among that very few seems fairly low.

Sure he won medals but his disability is in the least impactful category there is and doesn’t have any noticeable impact on his performance so I think it’s fair to compare him to regular sprinters, in which case he’s fairly average/below average.

So fair play to him for winning that stuff, but lets not be deluded here.

  3. That’s a crazy turn of speed he has there – now my vision is blurred! He was featured on BBC radio sports coverage this morning, he’s going ahead to be a coach or something in the Paralympics organisation.
