‘Landlords are petrified’: Property owners’ perspective on the rental crisis

  1. Oh ya poor fucking landlords, mine who is selling her 3rd house in January leaving me homeless is devastated

25k In rent never late and never asked for anything, selling because a price bubble, and no other reason, meanwhile rents have climbed from 800 to about 1300 in the last 3 years on the same apartment

Ya fuck this shit rag of a paper cunts

  2. Is this not about the 3rd the poor landlords property prices have increased too much for them article the Irish times have published in the last few weeks?

  3. Very few phrases I dislike more than “accidental landlord”.

Don’t you just absolutely hate it when you “accidentally” buy a second property and then “accidentally” put it on the rental market.

  4. > “I don’t give a fuck if landlords are discouraged from entering or staying in the rental market”

    > “Why is my rent so high?”

  5. The private sector should not be the biggest source of landlords.

    Vienna:

60% of people in high-quality cost-rental apartments, owned by government or other housing bodies.

You qualify for an apartment while earning up to double the average wage.

Rent is 600-700 euros per month for an entire apartment (including 2-beds).

Large relatively recent increase in city population size (about 30% of residents born outside Vienna).

And the private rental sector still exists in Vienna, and competes with the public one.

So if they can do it, why can’t we?

  6. I managed to buy a house in my town. Struggled to pay the mortgage every month but I did. Got a better job in another town and rented a place there. Rented out my own house (still paying the mortgage) as I wanted to return to my own town when the opportunity arose. The tax I paid on the rental income meant I was making a loss overall (as I was paying a mortgage and rent) but I felt it was my choice and that I would own a house at the end of it.

Then my landlord wanted his property back and I couldn’t find another place to rent. So I considered moving back to my own town and commuting. But my tenant also couldn’t find another place at the price I was charging. It took two years of hassle with my landlord, trying to help my tenant find a place, staying with friends before I could live in my own place.

I will never be a landlord again. Never.

  7. Really have to quit it with this two sides of every story shit. Less landlords means more available houses for purchase by someone who will actually live there. No sympathy for these leeches.

  8. One off landlords, who either are accidental landlords or people who were advised property was a good investment for passive income in retirement, are totally screwed over. They are taxed at the highest marginal rate, have to pay LPT, maintain the property, all the rights are with the tenants, have rent caps. The only people making money off renting are foreign investment funds who don’t pay any tax. Don’t blame one-off landlords for the current situation. Be careful what you wish for…

  9. In fairness to the landlords in this case, they are talking about regular people who own a house or two to rent. the big companies who buy entire complexes and make millions a year charging a fortune are the real pricks in all this.

Obviously there is potential for anyone (small landlord, tenant) to be a prick too

  10. What is the issue here? Just build more houses and STFU. 75% of Irish land is unpopulated fields full of fairies, cows and leprechauns – a WASTE of space. Build houses and STOP wasting our lives.
