Tourist tax could raise £17.5m – but will it drive visitors away?

  1. tourist tax to raise less than the government spends in 4 days on migrant hotels, as they furiously avoid building needed housing.

  2. This article is so poorly written.

Is it for tourists or everyone? It’s difficult to tell.

Is the money going to be ring-fenced or was it only included in the poll question to manipulate the answer?

Remember that there is no money that council cannot waste.

    >One reader, under the alias of Major Esterhazy, said: “Taxes influence behaviour. Tax tobacco and fewer people smoke. Tax refuse collection and there is more fly-tipping. Tax petrol and people drive less. A tourist tax would result in fewer visitors and reduced profitability for businesses within the national park.”

That would have explained the shortage of workers, when we have some highest taxes in the world on labour and it’s only going to get worse from April.

  3. Probably not.

Most places I visit internationally have some sort of small “bed tax” or “restort tax” on hotels that fills this role.

Often it’s a city or region tax rather than a national one, and usually is notionally to cover use of local infrastructure during the tourist’s visit. I’ve always taken it as fair play.

  4. I have never once checked if I have to pay tourist tax when going abroad and everyone time I have been charged it I have never cared about paying it.
