If they’re basing the term healthy off of your BMI measurements (which I imagine is the case as it’s HSE) then this survey can go in the bin as far as I’m concerned. I’m technically 2kg ‘overweight’ for my height and weight on the BMI chart and I train multiple times a week and eat a balanced diet.
People definitely associate the words ‘overweight’ and ‘obese’ with cartoonishly huge bodies. I am 5ft9-10 and over covid put on a good chunk of weight, got over 90kg at one point.
I was obese, I am now back to overweight. But if I would say that to anyone they’d be all ‘what are you on about, no you’re not obese – sure you look grand’.
And to be honest, I do look like the majority of lads in terms of body size – but that doesn’t mean that it’s grand, it just means that they’re all overweight or obese as well!
I think unless you get to the stage of standing out because you’re so large, nobody assumes that you’re big enough for it to be affecting your health
There are certainly a lot of husky gentlemen and curvy women around these days. I presume it must be easier to get fat these days. I remember being in school and yes you had a few fat kids but they were a rarity. I assume the food we consume and the constant stress we are under are the cause.
I’m obese.
Ultimately I am to blame.
I have previously lost weight but gained it all back and more.
One of the issues is I despise my housemates. We have a small fridge/freezer. The freezer just gets packed with stuff that ends up never getting eaten. None of them ever think of defrosting it and throwing out the food they don’t want. Literally, the freezer is constantly full. So if I go buy a bag of frozen chips, I have nowhere to put them.
Secondly, I generally just despise my housemates. Blaring music on their phones, in their rooms and hearing it vibrate through the walls, taking all the plates and forks into their rooms and never seeing them again, never cleaning, food left all over the counters where food prep would be done, never emptying bins, clothes left in tumbledryer and washing machine, clothes left thrown in a heap all over the utility room, no picking up of junk mail from the floor in from the letterbox, never putting the bins out.
I’m just sick of them. I just avoid them as much as I can. I don’t want to be in the kitchen making a meal and run the risk of them coming in, maybe with friends too. Making the same small talk with multiple people. After all these years doing it, I’m just fed up. “blah blah how’s work going, any plans for weekend, how was the weekend, weather is good” etc.
There’s just no comfort in house sharing anymore for me. I can go to the shop and buy food for dinner but then I arrive back and one of them might have friends over or their girlfriend over and they’ll be cooking in the kitchen for ages. So it could be hours later and I’d have been hungry so start with. So I just buy junk food or microwaveable meals.
2nd issue is I binge eat. I’ll devour a meal for 2 people or put away a share bag of crisps and chocolate and cans of soft drinks. Wish I didn’t have such a big apetite. When I lived with people I like I remember seeing him eat one or two biscuits and put the rest away. No way could I do that. I’d easily go through a 4 pack of wispas or dairy milk.
We are some fat fuckers. Fattest in Europe i believe.
MERICA 2.0?
Feckin man tits, muffin tops and wee bellies everywhere you look in this country. Add to that poor skincare and we’re an unhealthy looking country.
Not excusing our big fat issue but I do wonder how much of a factor it is that the Irish who remained in Ireland and survived the famine likely had lower metabolic rates than those who died.
Now, ofc we still need to be careful.. I’m just trying to find a way to blame UK for my big belly.

I’ll be very pedantic and say you can be overweight and healthy but we know what this means. If you’re say 5 foot 10 and over 12 stone 5 or so you’re overweight. Then you have body fat percentage which complicates things. Also, the only people trying to attack the validity of BMI are never bodybuilders either…..
As long as fresh food and vegetables are more expensive than frozen pizzas and chips we will continue to be overweight as a nation.
Nutrition, physical activity and cooking need to be taught in school from primary level.
As a woman, hormonal weight gain after a certain age is practically impossible to avoid and to shift.
The pandemic threw a spanner in the works, and the weight piled on. Still struggling to drop it to be honest.
I’m a regular gym goer and I walk almost everywhere, so I hope to be back to my optimum weight by end of year.
My main focus is heart health and strong bones, though I’d love abs and strong arms too!
I fluctuate between being in the “normal” category to “overweight” going by the BMI index. I’m right on that line the whole time. And I’m fairly ok with that. During lockdown I was firmly in the middle of the “normal” section but I found it much easier to be healthy in that time. I’m currently 87kg. If i can get down to 85 I’ll be happy.
I think a common sense approach needs to be taken on this, this whole “healthy at all sizes” nonsense isn’t helping anyone – spreads misinformation. Nobody should be bullied/made feel bad for being under/overweight, but it should be understood that these things are bad for you both mentally and physically
Would love to know what overweight looks like. I feel like I definitely don’t see 6/10 overweight adults walking around but maybe I just don’t know what to look for
What do you expect when we speak English, get 200+ days of rain each year, and our infrastructure (or near total lack thereof) forces people to drive everywhere instead of walking, cycling, or taking public transport.
That’s before you even consider that genetics are a thing that exists. When other nationalities eat baked goods like bread and pastries, they stay slim. Irish people pile on the pounds when they do the same. You can’t say that’s not a factor.
That’s being said, we could definitely make some effort to snack less. You’re all focusing way too much on _what_ people are eating, and not _how much_ people are eating.
Look at pictures of groups of people taken in the 70s/80s and see how “skinny” most are. But they not unhealthy they are what used to be typical, normal. Then food got cheaper, we got richer and the whole convenience and take out culture took off thanks to more money and less time society.
70% are in denial
Would you horse back 6 Mars bars in a night? Probably not. But you’d knock back 6 pints easy. Guarantee lots of people don’t consider the calories from their liquid diet.
These studies never define what measure they use. I assume its bmi, which is a terrible measure. I’ve played rugby and gaelic all my life and have always been categorised as overweight or obese in BMI
Now that I don’t play anymore I still train 4 or 5 times a week. I’m 187cm and about 100kg, I ran my first 5km since covid and did it in 23mins on tuesday. I’m healthy, but still by bmi counts me as overweight .
It’s a crock of shit
Last year I got diagnosed with fatty liver disease when I was overweight on the BMI index. Not close to obese. I don’t think people are aware that even being slightly overweight can affect your health.
Speaking to specialist doctors about it they are very worried that fatty liver will have a huge effect on society. I only found it because I got some blood tests done for another thing.
Food, Snack and soft & hard drinks industries all getting rich & lining us up for the Pharma industry to get rich too from diseases of consumption.
I was on the NHS website the other day to check my BMI, and there was a box to say if you were ‘active’, ‘moderately active’ or not at all. ‘Active’ was an hour every day – that’s how low the bar is. Just move for one hour in 24 hours.
Don’t worry guys big pharma is here to help. Ozempic and wegovy anyone?
Then you have ppl saying bmi is not an accurate measurement. Yeah, if you’re 6 ft and 100kg of pure muscle, bmi will list you as obese. Bmi works perfectly fine for most of us.
Well I only consider myself healthy because every time I have a medical they tell me I’m in perfect health. I get people see my body and wouldn’t think that, but it’s not what the docs say (although they also usual say that eventually my weight will catch up to me)
You don’t hear the term “fat yanks” anymore….we know why
It’s kind of a weird combination of two different bits of data
I’m overweight, probably 20kg overweight, and I know it.
But if someone asked if I was healthy, I’m not sure what I’d answer?
– Am I healthy as in I’m not sick? Yes
– Am I healthy as in exercising regularly and eating well, not drinking and not smoking? Also yes
– Could I be healthier? Absolutely yes, when I lose the weight. (I’m down about 8kg in the last 8 weeks since I started)
Not defending Americans. We’re a bunch of fat fucks. But I’m 6 feet tall. To not be obese I gotta be 190 or lower. I don’t look even the slightest bit over weight until about 230. A healthy weight for me is about 160 iirc based on bmi which determines obese.
We’ve gone from the slimmest to almost the fattest country in the EU in a few decades.
61% of Irish men and 49% of women are overweight, pretty bad statistic.
The most obese in the EU by 2030. 88% of Irish people expected to be obese by 2060.
The increase in processed food has to be a major part of it. Our parents’ generation ate a far healthier diet (albeit more grim) than we do now. Sedentary lifestyle obviously more common too. Plus the drink.
Unhealthy food is undoubtedly cheaper so there is a socioeconomic factor but I thought our *very successful economy* would make everything better…
im currently pretty big 170kg with only a height of 5.6 so I took a good long look in the mirror and did a lot of reflecing and realised my health is fucked so last week I started going for walks joined a gym and started counting my calories and realised I was eating healthty already, I was just eating to much of it, so I just reduced my portion sizes and cut out sugar and made sure I was only allowed 1500 calories a day I also allowed my self a treat day once a week to have some of the things I miss. In 1 week Ive lost 3.5kg now people will think thats way to much to loss in a week but if your as heavy as me you lose weight far more quickly.
I’m 5’8 and 10ish stone. I’ve had fat people tell me I’m underweight. 🤦♀️
People view a normal, health weight as underweight and overweight as ‘normal’.
A lot to do with this body positivity nonsense saying that being a fat fuck is okay. What do we expect to happen when this agenda is being constantly pushed.
That whale of a Lizzo is splattered everywhere shiting on about body image
