> Not only professionals but the residents we interviewed often recognised the complexity of the factors underlying ASB. The government might do better to present its ASB strategies in ways that recognise the need to be not only tough on ASB but tough on the causes of ASB.
LOL, who am I kidding, OF COURSE this shower of knee jerk incompetents have instead designed a policy designed to appeal to the “lock ’em up and throw away the key” demographic
> They will be made to wear jumpsuits or hi-vis jackets and work under supervision so that they are visible to members of the public, to assure them “justice is being done”.
This is (another) waste of taxpayer money in the making, with the money ending up offshore in crony capitalist accounts.
No one involved will give a single shit about turning anyones life around, or even about preventing further crime, instead, focus will be on maximising throughput and profit.
Does he mean, like, having parties when we shouldn’t?
It would be nice to see some of the people who let their dogs foul publicly shamed as part of this scheme. It’s something which is becoming increasingly worse.
I’m quite concerned about this, considering the police will get to make the decisions right there and then and what’s to stop them from going over the line or even doing it for the right reasons? It’s not mentioned in the BBC report (but is everywhere else) that the forces could force them to wash their police cars.
If Sunak thinks the public care more about offenders being visible more than alleviating some of the cost of living problems, than he’s even more out of touch and deluded than I thought.
I also question how the community is going to get a say if the police are giving out an ASB command that needs to be completed within 48 hours? Just sounds like waffle to me.
And where is the action on fraud, the biggest single crime statistic. Not wanting to put a too strong a spotlight on family and friends of daily heil readers, I presume?
I don’t suppose there’s any chance this includes telling anti-social members of his own party like Cruella Braverman and 30p Lee to behave in a civil fashion befitting of their office instead of LARPing as members of the Third Reich?
What with Rishi?
Police that can’t investigate violent crimes, burglaries or rapes?
Forgive me if I do not believe you.
With what police ? Just hire some police and let them be visible you buffoon
Starmer and Sunak both appealing to the “Bang them up” demographic. Can’t have those swing voters think we’re going to spend their money on expensive improvements, let’s just paper over the cracks and do a bit of police cosplay.
Especially disappointing from Starmer, I would expect him to have a bit more understanding of the causes of crime, what with him being a lawyer.
This is so easy.
1. Hire more police on the beat.
2. Actually enforce the law and punish offenders instead of shifting responsibility from the perpetrators.
Take the kiddy gloves off and clamp down, and the country will become a safer, happier place almost overnight.
If you want to stop anti social behaviour spend money on societal cohesion. Youth centres, sports centres, a great many more facilities for young people in Rural areas. Affordable public transport. Sure start, centres (and funding) for adult learning and yes more visible local policing.
Or just the usual, run everything into the floor and then stand slack jawed in amazement that everything goes to s***
You know what’s antisocial? Rich people hooving up all the economic gains for the last 50 years and paying less tax than poor people.
The political institution will do anything to avoid addressing inequality, which is the real cause of “anti-social behaviour”
They can say ‘crackdown’ but I believe they need to combat the causes of that crackdown. It is known that people living on or under the wage needed to live a normal life has increased. This nearly always results in a crime increase. Coupled with the fact that the justice system is laughable, there is no deterrent against committing crime or anti-social behaviour. In the 80’s I was a teenager living in a town of 18,000 with high unemployment, and criminality was high. 45 min drive from where I lived was a town with much lower unemployment, had over 30,000 inhabitants, but the town as a whole had a much lower crime rate. I think we are seeing a resurgence of this problem, only it is now coming from families with what is referred to a middle-class income.
Excellent news! Time to put these unruly, feral yobs back in their place
Go Rishi!
This is another great Tory diversion tactic.
Claim to crack down on anti-social behaviour. Everyone starts arguing about ASBOs and lack of police on the beat.
1) Draft law that cracks down further on public protests and demonstrations (bet you picket lines will be in the firing line).
2) Point to all the protests and strikes *that resulted from their policies* as examples of anti-social behaviour.
3) Profit.
He should start with members of his own party. They are the ones doing the most damage to communities and society.
>could have to carry out their punishment in hi-vis clothing
Like lots of people have to do their regular jobs?
This Tory Gov’t for many years has shown an anti-social behaviour in that it’s policies have benefited a select minority at the expense of the main body of society.
In the interests of justice let’s hope for a strong crackdown on this at the next General Election.
I don’t understand the arrogance in refusing to look at successful cases of improvement like in Singapore, the UAE, China/Taiwan, etc. – we can just copy them.
What, is he going to crack down an alcohol abuse? Nah… But them pesky stoners and nos users are obviously causing all the problems with their reefer madness and giggles!
Anti-social behaviour is pretty much a part of British culture by this point. Good luck changing it.
That’s what you would expect from a bunch of tw*ts sheltered from real life who have bottomless pockets and never felt the struggle.
I don’t defend people committing anti-social behaviour, but they are the product of system that has been designed to exploit the poor and make rich richer.
Now punish them by public humiliation. What the fuck is that?
I’d rather see those rich twats who pay less tax than hard working people paraded in high vis jumpsuits.
By ‘anti social behaviour’ I’m pretty sure he means ‘young working class people’ and not actual anti social behaviour.
Start looking closer to home and most would take that statement seriously
Until we get over our sick obsession with punishment without addressing the cause of crime, the lack of rehabilitation or god forbid we start treating criminals as human beings were never gonna escape this cycle. Obviously punishment for crime is necessary in a lot of scenarios but the fact that the tory voter base and a large amount of the country believe that anyone that’s committed a crime of any level deserves to be publicly hanged and don’t deserve any level of actual care or attempts at rehabilitation means just results in the further perpetuation of an inescapable existence which people are shamed for not being able to escape. But that doesn’t get votes sooo
Finally doing something with those little shits who keep smashing up the place in Westminster, at last!
If people have no hope they don’t care about their surroundings or the consequences of their actions as there’s no future anyway. Maybe instead of punishing people the government should focus on providing hope for people. But then that would conflict with the way governments retain power, through fear and division. Makes sense no government have ever solved the root cause.
Can we stop using safety equipment as a mark of shame and punishment?
It discourages use of both safety equipment and everyday clothing with the slightest flash of retroreflectives endangering both workforce and vulnerable road users.
Of course it’s the public that pays for the costs of preventable road and workplace deaths and injuries.
Advertising has many things in common with graffiti it defiles our public spaces and forces obscene messages onto people against their consent.
However one is considered to be a criminal offence the other is an acceptable business.
The difference is one is paid for by the wealthy the other comes from the dispossessed and marginalized.

Lmfao I swear every PM since Blair has had an ASB crackdown and all have done fuck all
This is great news. Look forward to the government implementing the thoughtful, multi disciplinary approach suggested by the likes of the [Joseph Rowntree Foundation](https://www.jrf.org.uk/sites/default/files/jrf/migrated/files/1861347774.pdf)
