When the strike action is: blocking a road.
And a group of people with weapons come and stand in your way to do that: that’s violence. And it’s also taking away the ability to strike.
Limiting “violence” to “physical altercation”, is a classic rhetorical trick by the oppressor to try and seem good to observers.
To give a comparison: If a husband doesn’t allow his wife to leave the house, and stands in front of the door until she sits down somewhere: that’s violence. Even in a situation where no physical altercation happened, just the standoff.
And then later when someone confronts him about this, he says “So? I didn’t beat her, did I?”.
Anyone can recognize the situation being set up, though. The man clearly signals, in this situation, that that’s what he’ll do if he doesn’t get what he wants.
And if you think, of that example: “The man is right, nothing bad happened”, you are siding with the oppressor, against the oppressed.
Unlike forming a human wall to stand for your conviction.
Intimidation is violence. Police coming in full riot gear with armor, shields and sticks is violence. There’s no need for a physical clash to define it as ‘violence’.
Without knowing the details of this situation, if I block the road, sooner or later police will show up. If I keep blocking the road I enter the “play stupid games, win stupid prizes” zone.
Beste vakbonden, ga niet met piketten staan. Ga met uw auto’s en rij er rondjes, wie uit het distributiecentrum rijdt moet u voorrang geven dus je kan een eeuwige cirkel vormen.
De Belg tolereert dit want file is nu eenmaal Vlaams canon.
