Penny is a 3 year old Beagle/Pug/Collie cross (she has been DNA tested!) who is being surrendered through no fault of her own. She is a very real victim of the housing crisis in Ireland at the moment, and her human is devastated. 💔 💔 💔
She’s a very friendly house dog and sleeps either on her bed or the couch. She has been attending daycare every weekday for the last year and is very good with other dogs – big and small as a result. She is also good with children. She is a very sociable dog, calm & quiet in the house, more like a cat really!
Outside she is more like a beagle and her recall needs some work, so she will need a secure garden. She absolutely loves going on a long sniffy walk!
Penny loves cuddles and can safely be left in the house without causing any damage. She is an excellent companion, very affectionate and loves playing with a ball.

Housing crisis is an issue for sure, but also people should have a bit of cop on, maybe don’t take on a pet if you don’t have a stable housing situation? I rent, I’d love to have a dog or cat, but the fact of the matter is they complicate the situation a whole bunch when you have to move.
This was always going to happen post Covid unfortunately.
I actually emailed about adopting this dog yesterday.
Have you seen the prices for dog and cat food lately. I know you can get cheaper food in Lidl or Aldi, but some animals won’t eat it after being on the more expensive brands for so long.
Money doesn’t stop people being trashy. If anything it allows them to be trashy in new ways like getting a dog they haven’t a notion of looking after.
Its because so many Landlords are no pets. So a lot of the time the people are forced into the decision of their pet or being homeless. I am dreading the day that I need to find a new place to live as I fear I may have to have someone take care of my dog till I find a place that allows me to have my dog with me.
There should be a background check on whether people are capable of taking care of a dog!
“No Choice” translates to “this is hard and I don’t want to do it anymore”
She’s a victim of people getting pets during COVID and people not realising COVID wasn’t going to last forever.
“Friend” of mine got a dog and *then* figured out their lifestyle was incompatible with any animal. I took puppy for “a couple of days” over half a year ago. My dog now.
There’s such an awful attitude towards pets but especially dogs in this country. Hit and miss public transport options, very few places will let you in with a dog (so feck all chance of having a cuppa or a beer when out for a walk), tough af to rent if you’ve a pet… all round negative attitude in general. People in my area leave their dogs tied up outside the shops when they go in, I think that’s wild. You wouldn’t tie your kid up outside. It means I have to go for a walk with the dog, walk past the shop to bring them home, then retrace my steps to go get milk and bread. I saw a thread on here recently about cultural differences between Ireland and the UK, one was that we treat dogs like animals and they treat dogs like pets. I wish we were a bit more accepting, in general, of dogs in Irish society.
Whenever I mention stuff like this, I get a lot of responses that people are afraid of dogs or are allergic or whatever, and I understand those concerns. But I think nearly every responsible dog owner will make sure their dog is leashed and under control in as much as possible. Even pet friendly places, I don’t see dogs running free, causing chaos, being nuisances. I don’t think it would be too much hassle if a dog was allowed in a Starbucks and just lay on the ground at it’s owners feet, tbh.
I think pets should be allowed as the default position for rental properties. If the landlord doesn’t want pets in the property, then they should be required to give a valid reason why.
Myself and my partner were looking after a friends dog for a few weeks. The owners had no issue with it in fairness but the property management company said it was against their policy so we had to give the dog back
Nothing to do with wealth just piece of shit humans treating pets as some gifts they can throw away after they get bored of it
> How are we in such a “wealthy country” and yet so many are being left with no choice but to give up homes/pets?
I think you are confusing wealth and equity.
What is madra? I know its irish for dog but is it a website for dogs in shelters or what?
I used to sleep with my dog either in our bed or in her bed next to me. I wake up at nights still searching for her. She is waiting for us to bring her to Ireland and every day it seems impossible. I am so heartbroken I feel i cant get joy in my life anymore. And in the place me and my partner are living we have a yard so its so absurd we can’t bring her over.
So at this moment I will either have to give up my dream job in a country I love to go back home to shitty discriminating sexists or give up my dog and live a lifeless life always searching for her next to me..
I’d sooner live on the streets with my dog than in mansion without him. I cannot understand how some people can surrender a part of their family.

The amount of people who can’t be arsed looking after pets properly is sickening and criminal.
I honestly believe there should be an aptitude/personality test before owning a pet and yearly inspections from a welfare association.
I have a unique perspective on this one. I got a dog last year and since then have moved home because it’s impossible to rent with a pet. I was planning to save and buy a place in the next few years but being forced to live at home has spurred me on to get it done quicker. I can understand why someone would be forced to surrender a pet. Not everyone is as fortunate as myself to have a family home to fall back on when needed, even if I hate it.
Edit: I’d add that I actually got my fella from Madra and I think he came from a similar situation as above. I wouldn’t give him back for the world and I’d rather be homeless than give him up.

It is very sad to see these things happen. But Ireland is not a pet friendly country if you dont own a house. Lived in Galway for 6yrs and hid my cats from the landlord because – no pets allowed.
I tried to adopt from Petmania when my first cat died, they refused me because I couldn’t provide letter from landlord that will allow me to have one. Landlord doesnt want to provide one because he said that pets are destroying things and makes the house smelly.
While I understand that pets can be very destructive, there are other ways to get around that. Get the tenant to put down a hefty pet deposit! This helps out with the replacement of whatever needs replacement after tenants move out. Instead, I got my cat and just hid it from the maintenance man. Good thing he was nice not to rat me out.
I am working for an animal rescue in Kerry and you wouldn’t know the amount of dogs that we get right now because of people going back to work now after Covid. And no foster people anywhere in sight. It’s just a fight every day.
Because people are idiots who dont understand how much money/time go into having a dog. I really cant stress how stupid people are when it comes to animals
Uh reading these comments also makes me realise how much i hate “Dog” people
Gonna point you to my previous point “I really cant stress how stupid people are when it comes to animals”
Dogs are animals, perfectly capable of living in a garden and being housed in a shed
People shouldn’t have pets if they rent
I would argue that there’s a sizeable proportion of people out there who got sick of the pet or couldn’t be arsed to look after it anymore.
It’s shocking how many people out there are that selfish.
I’m gonna go hug my dog and tell him he’s never allowed to leave 😁
Because these are irresponsible folks who shouldn’t have gotten dogs as they couldn’t commit fully.
I think the real crime is the jacket. Poor dog.
It’s a sad situation. I waited until to had my own home to get a dog . Rescued a few over the years -found abandoned – was very hard to send them to madra instead of keeping them but with housing impossible it was better they didn’t get attached to me & vice Versa
Ireland has a serious problem with dog breeding and people treating dogs as accessories. Although it doesn’t stop with dogs we are far behind other developed nations when it comes to legal protections afforded to animals.
Word of warning to anyone who wants to get a dog. They cost a lot of money, time and energy but they are great craic to be around. You need to be comfortable sharing your life with them so if your life consists of frequent holidays, working away from home and just never being at home – volunteer down at the local shelter to walk their dogs. You shouldn’t have a dog.
People need to stop fecking buying dogs too.. the shelters are full. We ship most of our unwanted dogs to Nordic countries were they are more valued.
