Using language like extremist is counterproductive to finding a path where both sides of the issue can forge ahead.
There’s currently a massive clash of interests between our farming industry and the massive environmental/ecological issues we face.
You can’t blame farmers or the rural TDs that represent them for being worried but we can’t continue to farm the way we do either.
It’s up to the government and the EU to find ways for Irish farmers to transition to more environmentally sound methods of farming, and encourage consumers to consume environmentally friendlier food, while avoiding the decimation of our indigenous farming industry which effectively keeps rural areas alive.
Michael Collins TD for various Cork peninsulas is a nasty piece of work.
Dairy is decimating the environment now.
The farming lobby seems determined to destroy Irish farming’s social licence.
I don’t think they’ve thought this through at all.
They don’t like the conclusions of the random selection of citizens, so they attack the concept of the citizens assembly
Intensive farming is incompatible with environmental goals like biodiversity and co2 reduction. The problem is that intensive farming is needed to help keep food prices low. And it doesn’t matter the type of the farming (dairy, beef, tillage, vegetable) creating large scale monocultures that require intensive amounts of artificial fertiliser will create problems for the environment in some form or other. Tough choices will need to be made and everything will need to be on the table. Farmers should know the damage they are doing and the government & the people should know that if they want to improve the environment then they will be costs involved.
People: please don’t kill our rivers by polluting them by destroying them with nitrates
Farmers: THIS IS AN ATTACK ON FARMERS WHO FEED THE WORLD DO YOU WANT TO STARVE?
When do we start eating bugs?
>said that the government “should not be allowed to dictate the foods that people eat”.
Absolutely agree, we should stop subsidising beef and lamb, let them compete on the free market so the government isn’t dictating what we eat.
“dictating what Irish people should eat” For the love of fuck, LMFAO
