The german border is pretty long, and it doesn’t look like there’s much of value in the direct vicinity of the fort. What is stopping an invading army from invading a few kilometers north or south and staying out of the way of the scary place with the canons?

Only a tiny part of this structure is really old. Most of it was rebuilt end of last century.
