I thought rail freight was a good thing, esp in terms of having lower emissions than road?
> Campaigners in the cathedral city of St Albans have said “no thank you” to plans to convert a former airfield into a rail-connected logistics park.
NIMBYism really is a force for evil. When talking about infrastructure that would benefit huge swathes of the UK, local people living wishing a few miles shouldn’t be allowed to say no. It’s a case of the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few. Millions of people could benefit vs a few thousand losing out.
I live in the area. The NIMBYism is strong here. We get leaflets from the Lib Dem MP and councillors all the time bragging about things they’ve blocked.
People act like it’s some kind of rural idyll when it’s actually a very heavily populated area full of infrastructure and A roads and motorways.
The other day I drove down a street with large “stop green belt development” signs planted every 30 yards. Even though the streets literally backs onto the North Orbital Road. Couldn’t make it up.
