Hi all, another question from Israel.

Whenever we say that we don’t want to be like Hungary, the Netanyahu people say that the [economics in Hungary is only getting better](https://twitter.com/GadiTaub1/status/1635573340176785409) and it’s GDP is going up. I think it is BS, but I am not familiar with the statistics.[I do see that the GDP is going up](https://www.google.com/search?q=hungary+gdp&oq=hungary+gdp+&aqs=chrome..69i57j0i67i650l2j0i512l7.4475j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8).

Please tell me what you think. I do admit I don’t know how GDP is calculated and who is calculating it.

  1. I don’t understand the question, or rather the point of it.

    You are trying to ask about a more or less objective statistic (that is scrutinised by supernational organizations, economists and financial experts) on a reddit platform that is infamous for being a “bubble”.

    In no way shape or form is this community representative of Hungary, and GDP isn’t measured based on how people perceive it

    edit: also, the google link for GDP isn’t adjusted for PPP. A more useful metric is the GDP per capita in PPP

  2. Hungary is not an economic success. She shows up in most figures only mediocre numbers and one could easily argue that in the recent year she’s had the worst economic performance in the EU. (Record inflation for instance)

  3. When we joined the EU we were the 3rd strongest economy of the former eastern bloc, now we are the 2nd worst. The wages are laughable, and the inflation is the highest in europe. Is this something you want to follow?

    Yes, there was significant GDP growth since Orbán came to power. No use denying that. Actually, the point is more refined:

    The truth: 2012-2019 was a conjucture in world economy – every neighbouring country could achieve decent growth.

    However Orban and its propaganda tells (e.g using quarterly data from an especially good year) that we are one of the healthiest, fastest growing economies. But you see, Poland and Romania for example, shows a more impressive growth. Hungary is only average. (and the economic policy to achieve it led to many structural problems).

    The fidesz just used the general macrotrends to build up an image of a competent economic leadership. And many people bought it because of their personal impovement in their life, lack of comparition and propaganda.

    This is the hungarian “idea”, this was always a bad strategy because the growing tendency is not sustainable

The truth is this growing was highly financed by EU funds, which we lost this year. So we will go down now. We dont invest into education, but instead we bring here the worlds all blue collar job, so we can utilize and keep our low wages. The state has massive propaganda, we are constantly fighting with someone (Soros, Brussels, migrants) yet we are saying we want peace in ukraine right now. We are still supporting russia as much as we can. Young people do not see their future in the country.

  10. It’s all lies, the economic performance of Hungary is average at best and reforms distort the full picture. Inflation is sky-high and sustainability is very questionable. We also underpeformed projections by quite a margin.
