tbf,i think that battery **trams** are the future, once battery technology becomes advanced enough
the first time i rode modern trams in Amsterdam i fell in love with the fact that it was so smooth, like i left a cup of tea on the floor to see if it spills when stopping at stations and it didnt at all
its the same experieence i get with ICE trains in Germany:that its so comfortable that you forget you’re ridding and can do other productive stuff on the way(writing ,studying, having lunch, watching a movie) so a 3 hour ride is not a waste of time at all
this is unlike a 3 hour ride on a coach bus(altough electric buses are far more comfortable)
also, by using so little space for the wheels, trams dont put so much pressure on road surface as cars do,and you can literally let the space between tracks to be covered by grass
+,due to the predictable path, trams are a **low-hanging fruit for automation**
the main disadvantage of trams is the huge cost of building all that overhead infrastructure + the aesthetic impact of so much electrical wiring in the middle of the city
(this is the main reason why not all trains are electrified,**as building overhead infrastruucture is god-damned expensive)**
battery electric trams, even if only partialy and only on some ~~routed~~ routes, will likely be the solution, and can bring smooth sustainable transport without ruining aesthetics of cities
so much for hydrogen economy
hydrogen will definitely play a role in cleaning shipping and aviation and likely long-distance trucking, but very limited potential for public transportation
If you are still buying diesel city busses really have to wonder wtf you are doing.
Honestly can’t decide if it’s good or bad. Diesel buses suck, yes, but so do electric busses due to current tech.
Yes! My uni uses electric buses to get students around the campus and they’re just great!
Sadly, it seems that the overall numbers are decreasing 🙁
I don’t know what the solution is, but an acquaintance in NL drives an electric bus and he says that the quality is shit. It’s a BYD, I believe.
I’ve noticed electric city busses in Leipzig (Germany) crusing the city center recently. They’re VERY silent. Sometimes you don’t even notice them. They’re unbelievably quiet and obviously don’t smell. It’s great!
