I disagree with Macron, especially with the context of this summit. America, a mostly liberal and democratic nation should always be a closer ally of Europe than China, even if it sometimes goes against Europes best interests we should mostly, but not always support their decisions.
China is an authoritarian nation that has brutally taken away its citizens rights through concentration camps in Xinjiang and controlling their citizens freedom of speech through a government monopoly on social media, deeply taking away peoples rights to freedom of speech, and possibly willing to invade Taiwan, a liberal democracy. It’s best that we slowly become independent of this county – and many other authoritarian nations that go against our fundamental values.

Villifying China is not strategically beneficial to Europe in the same way that it is to America. One of the primary reasons that China doesn’t throw more weight behind Russia in Ukraine is because it has ties to maintain with European interests across Eurasia and Africa. Primarily, access to European markets and access to land and sea trading routes controlled by European militaries.
While China is happy to use Russia as a resource depot, it’s bread and butter is complex manufacturing focused on exports. This inherently requires trade with wealthy advanced economies to be profitable. Tensions with America and many of it’s neighbours over Taiwan makes westbound trade a crucial economic safety net for China.
Conversely, Europe can leverage this relationship to have China lean on aggressive eastern states like Russia or Iran to make them behave more amicably towards Europe. For example, Russia can never use it’s nuclear weapons preemptively because it would lose it’s alliance with China and become a true pariah.
Another key thing to remember, is that the Chinese are only economically aligned with other authoritarian states such as Russia, Saudi Arabia or Iran for imports. As the wealth distribution in these states is extremely top heavy, the majority of their population can’t afford to pay high prices for imported Chinese goods, not a great export market for China.
While the high levels in Chinese Government may be far more authoritarian than most European governments, they still prefer to trade their exports with democratic European countries. This is because the combination of capital driven markets and socialistic education in Europe (alongside a metric ton of generationally accumulated wealth) makes them the best buyers for complex products produced by an advanced manufacturing economy like China’s.
With all that in mind, a cordial relationship with China is likely the best way for Europeans to influence Eastern cultures into a more compatible and peaceful relationship with Europe. This is in contrast to American interests, which would prefer an unsteady Europe tethered to America, particularly to it’s natural resources and it’s arms exports. I think Macron is looking ahead to a post war Europe and preparing for this.

We decided to be neutral during the Cold War, opening a diplomatic relationship with Staline and kicking NATO’s forces out of France because the US’ never been a fan of allies with a brain.
The war in Irak, NSA spying on our president and then the story of Australia’s submarines proved us this hasn’t changed since then, neither China nor the US sees us as friends or allies, just toys to be played with whenever it pleases them, there’s no reason for us to follow either.
