Hey r/Croatia ! As someone who enjoys learning more about different cultures, I wish to create a Spotify playlist that includes songs from as many countries in the world as possible, and I need your help. List some timeless classics that define Croatia culturally, and I will add the 5 most upvoted ones to the playlist.

  13. If you want Croatian Islands vibe you should definetely listen to “Mali dućan” and “Na Palagružu”.

    For Dalmatian coast vibe you should listen to “Daleka Obala”. My favourites are “Valovi” and “Ruzinavi brod”.

    For best impression of Split 90-s you should listen to Kuzma and Shaka Zulu and Dino Dvornik.

    These are the real vibes.

    You can also listen to Oliver Dragojević, Mišo Kovač and others. They are Croatian pop back in the days. Not sure if those are the vibes you are looking for.

    Keep in mind that I’m only sending you vibes from Dalmatian coast and islands.

  15. The problem with Croatia is that you essentially have several mini-countries within one.

    Every region has traditional music of its own, and on occassion, they couldn’t be more different.

    For example, in the eastern Croatia (Slavonija and Baranja), you have the classic tamburica: [Krunoslav ‘Kićo’ Slabinac – Otiš’o je s mirisima jutra](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yL9Npmao854) or [Slavonske lole – Duša bećarska](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVuPBwTajhw).

    Dalmatia has similar, but different music. You have something like this: [Tomislav Ivčić – Večeras je naša fešta](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb_X3LcdE7M&list=PL0xPGbCbrxlRDCRM4eazL0KcrSKzRPQOF&index=4) or more klapa (traditionally male vocal ensembles): [Klapa Šibenik – Falile se Kaštelanke](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPMdVuwf5C8).

  18. Not easy at all given the diversity of Croatia but here is my list:

    Oliver Dragojević – Cesarica (there are many songs from Oliver and he is an absolute legend here and has better songs than this one but this is THE song surely)

    Miroslav Škoro – Ne dirajte mi ravnicu (also a classic from a singer that is now, unfortunatley, too involved with politics; this one could easily be replaced with Mata also from Miroslav but that’s just my opinion)

    Marko Perković Thompson – Lijepa li si (you could call it the alternate anthem of Croatia at this point basically)

    Doris Dragović – Malo mi za sriću triba (a really beautiful song coming from a beautiful voice that I have to include)

    Arsen Dedić – Odlazak (I have to include Arsen in this list and I chose this one but there are many choices as there are with Oliver)

    Prljavo Kazalište – Heroj ulice (not my favourite song and not their best but they are probably the most famous band in Croatia with many songs; here you could probably choose Ruža hrvatska as a more presentable song but I still chose this one over it)

    This list doesn’t do justice at all for all the songs and singers from Croatia. I didn’t include amazing singers such as Vinko Coce (Vilo moja), Zorica Kondža, Tereza Kesovija, Jelena Rozga, Massimo, Josipa Lisac and many bands such as Parni Valjak (Dođi, Kada me dotakne), Haustor (Šejn), Magazin, Colonia and many many more. I didn’t even mention that many.

    Also, You can make a whole list of songs just about HNK Hajduk Split but that’s for another time.

    The issue is, there are many different cultures or sub-cultures within Croatia, some related to the specific regions of the country, and some related to contemporary issues and urban identities; other related to the countryside, referencing the past with nostalgia, some criticizing the current political or social situation… The genres are diverse and often incompatible, the above are just a few examples off the top of my head of songs that may be relevant from a certain point of view.
