The vast majority of voters who are leaving the tories aren’t going to another party, they’re becoming “don’t know” voters/non voters. They probably haven’t changed their political beliefs much and they probably still agree with the party platform, they’ve just been put off voting tory by the current PM and other ministers.
Which means that theres a good chance of these voters coming back once the scandal dies down, or if the tories find another PM. Labour needs to attract voters from that CON -> DK voting bloc, because these could give Labour the majority it needs.
This is why copying the US election (Bland Biden vs Massive Monster) was a mistake for Labour.
The Conservatives can off-load their monster and turn things around in weeks. They have a voter base that will turn out regardless of almost anything.
Labour always need to motivate and energise, they aren’t going to be doing that under Starmer.
Starving kids? Nothing.
Disabled people dying in large numbers due to being left destitute? Not a sausage.
146 thousand dead due to mismanagement of a pandemic? Not arsed.
Government uses said pandemic to steal public money? Nah.
