‘I’m not moving out’: Tenants plan to stay in Dublin apartment block past eviction date

  1. A very selfish move. For every household saved from being on the streets due to squatting / overstaying, 100 more are going to be homeless from landlords exiting the markets due to this sort of carry on

  2. Judging by the state of the bedroom I’d say it’s better to get everyone out and do the place up. Looks like a damp dump.
Also telling his friends not to move here, is it easy to move to Ireland from Pakistan?

  3. Overholding is not a good option. It’s the least worst option in an impossible situation, and in my opinion, preferable to going into a homelessness crisis where there is likely no shelter available anywhere else.

People should be aware, if they overhold and after months a judgement is made to evict them, that becomes a publicly searchable record. Any future landlord will look that up when considering your application to be a tenant and you will not be accepted once they see your history. I think this is highly unfair, but people should know what they’re getting into if they go all the way to the end of the road of eviction.

  4. Hard to blame anyone faced with the prospect of homelessness.

Emergency accommodation is pretty much at capacity as is so if you’re options are overstay or sleep on the street…… yeah, pretty easy choice.

  5. That’s bananas. I’ve said this before but I’m gonna say it again in the context of this article

My brother has an apartment that he’s renting out. He wants to sell it as he needs the money to refurbish a derelict house that he and his wife bought. It’s not liveable.

Meanwhile they and their 2 small children have spent the entire winter living in a mobile home. He didn’t anticipate the recent eviction ban and didn’t anticipate not being allowed to sell his apartment.

I can’t imagine the stress for them if his tenant refuses to move. How much longer will they have to live in a mobile home, freezing their balls off?

    It’s crazy.

  6. Genuine question but how does a Pakistani migrant stay in the country for 8 years? Don’t they only have short term study/ work visas for people coming from outside EU?

  7. It will be sold to a nice private fund that will put it back on the rental market for 1000€! And our government will applause that!
While in the meantime, we need to feel sorry for the landlords with >2 appartements that are paying big tax on the “fair” rent they are asking !
I still remember this woman giving out because she has 7 places that she rent and it’s a lot of tax…
