The thing is, this is probably awful for the person involved, but being an ex renter with two decades of landlords under my belt, it’s hard to feel too much sympathy.
This happened to my elderly parents. A couple of junkies wrecked their house and wouldn’t leave or pay rent. Ended up losing over €20k.
He’s getting 1200 a month from her but has no money to fix her heating or fridge? Same old salty landlord shite.
Really wish the law would clamp down better on bad actors and flawed procedures.
It’s ridiculous that bad landlords can do flagrantly and easily flout the law, just as it’s ridiculous that you can have a tenant living in your property for more that two years.
Enforcement seems to be so utterly pisspoor in this country regarding housing regulations.
“They just gave me a new form . . . That’s all they did.”
HAP in a nutshell…
This is why landlords cannot give an inch because eventually you’ll get someone like this who will take advantage. At least she’s been named in the media now and any future landlord should be able to find her when they Google.
Unfortunately this is missing some important informaiton. Without it, people are going to jump to conclusions about the landlord still getting €1,200 a month in his pocket etc.
I don’t know the facts either. For example, we don’t know how much the mortgage is on the property, we don’t know what other costs this man has going on in his life that might mean he has next to nothing left at the end of the month.
He has tried to be decent and give her plenty of notice and extensions and it’s not his fault she hasn’t found somewhere else to live. He has offered to give her landlord references etc so it’s not as if he is wiping his hands completely.
Cases like this are what would put people off buying properties as an investment in the future. It will result in us only having corporate landlords in this country. Do you think a corporate agent would allow the extensions this man has allowed – not a chance.
**Edit** – my use of the term “investment” is poor above. I know housing is a right. I think we need to acknowledge that not everybody wants to own a house though so landlords are somewhat of an unfortunate necessity barring some massive change which doesn’t seem to be coming any day soon.
A lot off astro-turfing going on here.
Cry about it
There should be a scheme where county councils buy out properties like this and keep the tenant in situ
> Several times, as she spoke from the house, children could be heard. Appliances and heating had broken in the house, she said. “**The landlord said the reason why he can’t fix anything is because he has no money**. So we have to stay here with no heaters, no fridge. I have kids. I know I have to move out but the rent is still getting paid.” **Her rent was €1,142 per month.**
Love these poor landlord sob stories from the IT
Can buy a fridge for 120-300 EUR. They’re not that expensive. Just use the rent to buy one
Is the landlord right? Is the tenant right? It’s a matter of opinion and in truth they both are a bit right.
But that’s beside the fact.
How many people with 400k in their back pocket would decide to be a landlord after reading that?
No landlords means everyone looses.
This is absurd. What the hell is she thinking? Where is the father of the kids? If he’s dead the council shoukd have found her a place.
I’m no landlord lover but honestly, there doesn’t seem to be any winners nor does there seem to be any outright bad guys here.
From what’s in the article it seems he tried to be fair, give plenty of notice, played by the rules, extended time etc etc while the tenant can’t seem to find a place, doesn’t want to be made homeless and is faced with the usual council bullshit where they won’t do anything for you if you’re about to be homeless. They’ll only help after you become homeless. Which is ridiculous.
I know folks are giving out about the fridge situation and while that’s obviously very poor form, again from the article it would appear to me this guy likely isn’t turning a profit. That rent is extremely cheap and if he bought the place during the last boom, God knows how much of a mortgage there is on it.

Seems like a sorry state of affairs all around.
