‘Extremely rare’ 17th-century painting of Black woman with White companion placed under export bar from UK

  1. I know very little about art so I assume it’s been ruled out already, but is it possible that it’s a portrait of Dido Elizabeth Belle and her cousin Lady Elizabeth Murray? They were in a portrait together as teens I believe, and very much grew up as sisters. The original portrait of Belle and Elizabeth is quite famous for showing them both ‘at the same level’ and they look remarkably similar.

  2. Well, that proves BLM wrong then. This country has always treated black people as equals, allegorical paintings can’t lie.
