Less than 42% of 25-34 year olds in Ireland live at home. Of the 27 countries, there are 9 EU countries with a higher number of young people living at home **but** there was a significant increase in Irish 25-34 year olds in 2021. I did look quickly for 2022, but couldn’t see any up-to-date information.

Post from the r/Europe sub but wanted to highlight the Irish context

  1. Once again, we’re pretty spot on the average line for the EU.

    Despite the strong r/ireland views.
    >bUt IreLAnD iS A DiSgrAcE!! I’vE BeEn To OTher CoUnTriEs And We aRe WoRse ThAN AnYWhERe eLsE!!!

  2. Anyone notice that massive spike from 20 to 21, or do we just ignore that and try to pretend that IrElAnD iS jUsT aVeRaGe and that the lived experience of people suffering from the housing disaster is just illusionary. Yep, nothing to see here.

And like a train someone will no doubt arrive pretending that the CSO 70% home ownership rate related to all adults instead of as a percentage of the overall housing stock.

  3. Countries with low levels of people living at home tend to have an abundance of cheap but tiny single bed apartments for rent. Those kinds of developments are constantly blocked in Ireland, but they’re badly needed if we’re to give young people the opportunity to leave their parent’s homes.

  4. Just fyi on Italy, I think it’s common for people to live at home but they get or own the family home then – I forget what exactly is the situation but it’s not the same as here

  5. You can’t have young adults being able to afford to live alone or 1 mate, that would ruin everything. We need to completely normalise cramming as many people into a gaff as possible to keep rents high. Sure its someone’s livelihood… /s

It suits the government to have our young emigrate and not fight this
