Hello knowledge folks,
I have an appointment soon for a German youth mobility Visa application in Toronto. The covid situation of course may totally flip the table on this but I still want to try. I am applying under category 2d) Young Canadians who wish to stay in Germany for tourism and cultural discovery purposes while being authorized to work to supplement their financial resources. I will be providing a letter of motivation, and I have proof of accommodation, as well as most of the supporting documents.
When I am filling out the online application there is a section requiring a reference. Is this a Canadian employer reference or German? I’m confused as it is my understanding under the category I do not need to have a employment contract at time of application. I have had many very good conversations with potential German employers but they will only consider once I am actually in Germany.
Other questions are, for the flight Itinerary, must you actually purchase a flight or is using something like [https://visareservation.com/](https://visareservation.com/) acceptable?
For the proof of financial capacity, is a bank statement showing the required amount acceptable (approx $4,500.00 CA dollars)? My German boyfriend will be helping me initially, so I suppose he could be a sponsor?
For the Health insurance, it has to be for the full duration of the stay? I’ve heard suggestions of [https://www.worldnomads.com/ca-en/travel-insurance](https://www.worldnomads.com/ca-en/travel-insurance), could anyone recommend? seems very expensive but if that’s what’s required, I’ll do it.
any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

I don’t think you actually need to provide paperwork for the flight bookings, merely state the intended flight dates (in/out). The visa will typically be issued starting 2 days before the intended flight date and that’s that.
Reference could be anyone. Since you have a German boyfriend, why not pick him directly? Easiest possibility.
Bank account statement is perfectly suitable for the proof of financial capabilities.
For the health insurance, I can’t check the world nomads one without filling in personal details (already a deterrent for me), so you need to compare yourself.
There is however this one here from BDAE https://www.bdae.com/en/health-insurance/for-foreigners-in-germany that I’m personally using as a German living abroad (so the other way around), but they have a dedicated insurance for a stay in Germany as a foreigner. Their insurance coverage is provided by Swiss Life, and they have so far always handled my cases without issues.
