Defenceless Ireland should be ashamed of itself

  1. Why would we pay for our protection when the Brits do that for us?

Kind of like the BBC, thanks British taxpayers!

  2. To think that it’s *this* lot that so many people here, including on this sub, believe will watch out for us if the shit hits the fan.

  3. The only, and I literally mean ONLY military force Ireland needs to prepare itself against is the UK. No one else is interested in us. The Nazi’s didn’t bother. The soviets didn’t bother. At the height of terrorism on the continent, even terrorists didn’t bother.

The Brits are our biggest military threat.

  4. Let’s be honest, there is some truth to it. We are well placed beside nuclear Britain and France for protection. And we all assume that the US would help is in our time of need.

But the Telegraph is a Tory rag and they are just bitter about their special relationship.

  5. I mean, he has a point. We have absolutely no idea what’s going on in our skies and our seas. We don’t need a huge military capable of mobilising the entire population against an invasion like Finland. But what we do need is some jets, a decent radar system and a decent navy. So that we can deter a couple of Russian aircraft and sea vessels from entering our territory. We can’t even do a simple thing like that at the moment, we completely rely on the RAF to sort it out for us.

  6. You should see the rest of the British press today, their heads are imploding. This is the second article I’ve seen from the Torygraph with this sort of slant, one of them authored by a former aide to Margaret Thatcher, which is no surprise.

  7. Take away the not so well disguised anti Irish rhetoric and the rest is pretty spot on with regards to woeful defense capabilities.

  8. They do have a point.

We lack even the most basic of abilities like being able to detect aircraft in our airspace, or adequately patrol our EEZ, defend ourselves from cybersecurity attacks or even a heavy long-range airlift capabilities.

When the Ranger Wing went to Afghanistan they had to hitch a lift with the French if I’m not mistaken. Just embarrassing stuff another for a supposedly wealthy and developed nation.

The world can change very quickly and we should at an absolute minimum at least have an idea of what exactly is going on in our backyard.

  9. I’m sure the author of the piece mentioning that we supplied potato seeds to Ukraine is not some attempt to play up to stereotypes at all. Tory cunts

  10. “A nation portraying itself as historically oppressed”. “Seed potatoes”. Former Colonel Kemp has all the Torygraph clichés to hand to ensure he hits the right tone of Tory presumption.

What he won’t admit is that it suits the UK that Ireland will not shoulder more of its own defence needs as that it keeps it dependent on the UK and amenable to being nudged in particular directions. In terms of payment he neglects to mention the €500,000,000 being spent on “shared island” programmes 2020-2025 while the DF were run into the ground.

An independent nation while acknowledging its responsibility to its neighbours, its economic foundations in the EU and its values would not allow itself to be so militarily dependent on a state dominated by a class like Colonel Kemp.
