Irish Government defends moving against Swiss grannies who are fighting for the climate

  1. Very exciting to see these developments yielding fruit!! The Dutch courts led the way (in a way the Dutch government most certainly was did not). A few more rulings like this could actually give me hope for the future.

And of course our government opposes it. We have consistently treated fines for climate inaction as a cost of doing business. FG signs us up to binding climate commitments with no intention of actually making the necessary cuts. It’s free PR and what’s a few hundred million in fines anyway. So of course they’re shitting themselves at the prospect of actually having to take action instead of just pissing away our money on pointless fines.

  2. >Ireland argues the European Convention on Human Rights, which the court is set up to uphold, does not guarantee the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

A real good hill to die on.
