Landlords demanding renters send photo, CV and character references

  1. And people wonder why there’s so much hate for landlords. When the leeches are asking you for a job application for a basic human necessity, we really have hit peak capitalism.

  2. Can I get a full financial check on potential landlords to know they aren’t slumlords mortgaged out of their eyeballs and will have to sell up when interest rates change half a percent? No? Ok then

  3. CV is a new one but the rest is nothing new. I stayed in Birmingham for a while and the landlord required a fucking guarantor for my rent. Like . As a grown-ass adult with a full time job I had to have my dad who lived 200 miles away (and did not have a job, I might add) guarantee my rent for me.

  4. The agents also want guarantors, and that is me.

I had to supply my credit score, a statement from my employer, and bank statements.

Back in my renting days I met the landlord, they said what the rent was and I agreed.

    Fuck this shit.

Take a bit of risk you money grabbing parasites.

One of my friends bought a flat for his oldest child back in the 90s. (Or started the mortgage)

The value of the flat went up by more than my pals wage some years.

  5. I would have to be extremely desperate before I did business with people so condescending. Far as I’m concerned this is just a new way to filter out prospective landlords, what a load of bollocks lol

  6. Finding a place to live now seems to be a full time job. How the hell do they expect us to find somewhere if you need to be working all hours under the sun to pay them the extortionate rent?. Now they want an interview and interrogation? Get lost.

  7. Fuck these cunts man.. no one should be a fucking landlord.. housing shouldn’t be used as an investment arm for the rich..

  8. It’s like OLD out there – too many to choose from so you build in bullshit criteria just to thin the numbers to a manageable level. It won’t put off any liars or desperate ones.

  9. While it’s not my own, very fortunate to be in a council house.

Rented directly from a landlord once and it was just utter shit. Chap was “alright” but got fed up of the weekly “I just goto nip round to check the boiler” or something else and he ends up doing a full inspection.

Advised him 3-4 times that the boiler was broke and it took him 12 months to fix.

However, renting through estate agencies, who are also completely and utter shit, don’t hassle you. Thanks to covid, went 2 years without one inspection and it was bliss.

  10. Full accounts, mortgage statements, credit check and privacy notice covering processing of my personal data please.

  11. I’ve had to rent different places each year for 5 years now (not by choice), and each time it has gotten worse and worse. Most recently, I was told to write a bio about myself tailored for the property, CV, photo, in order to get a viewing. Then once I saw it, 20 people were put into a 2 round bidding war over the course of 2 days. To be the “winner” I stumped up 6 months advance payment. Then, I had a call with the agency, and a further “interview” via Zoom with the landlord.

Bare in mind, both of us are high earners, gave 2 excellent references from current and previous landlords, no previous financial difficulty, and so on.

We got the place, but we don’t know if we can continue living in this part of the country any more and are thinking about moving abroad again.

The hoops we need to jump through just to live somewhere reasonable are just outrageous, and take up so much time and stress. On top of all that, the agencies you deal with are just so unbelievably rude and horrible. They could tell you to fuck off but still you need to beg them for somewhere because the ball is completely in their court.

  12. I don’t really understand what is driving this. Proof of income is a bit nosey but almost understandable. References kinda make sense. But why photos, why a credit score like someone said, why a cv? There’s plenty of people wanting (needing) to rent but are landlords experiences so bad that they have to go through all of this to find someone to rent to? I

  13. This seems perfectly reasonable. In fact, I should start asking my closest mates to provide this kind of info on their latest boyfriends and girlfriends before bringing them to my house for dinner. Christ some people are barbaric.

  14. We need landlord reviews from ex tenants. Why should I give you my money, why should I employ you too look after the safety of this house?

  15. To be fair, its more of a benefit for the neighbours too. We all have nightmare stories of renting near scumbag neighbours. Least you know with the checks that every bodies on the same page character wise.

  16. As a landlord I’ve seen so many of my fellow landlords sell up – just because they’ve had a problem tenant refuse to pay for 6-12months, and they were entirely powerless to stop them with the new laws and court congestion. Said tenant would often then leave the house completely destroyed. This would wipe out any profits they had made.

You might think landlords selling up is a good thing. In reality, the house the landlord sold is bought up, more often than not, by a foreign investor, as a ‘second/holiday home’, as an AirBNB, or a bigger ‘institutional’ landlord (banks are beginning to buy up houses too).

It means there’s even less homes available for rent, and landlord criteria becomes stricter. I will not accept any tenant now without a one-month deposit (and one month paid in advance), a ‘good’ or above credit rating and a solid job.

  17. I’m moving to London for work and have just spent the last week flat hunting. Having heard the horror stories I was ready for battle, but my experience was perfectly straightforward with every agent I dealt with. Sure, the rents are too high but it was all good otherwise. Got the second flat I applied for.

  18. Moved into our current place and had to provide so much and this was after a month of battling to even see a place. No one is moving unless they really have to in the rental market because prices are going up and up because no one is moving.

Found out from the neighbours that the house has had 4 tenants in one year and that before that, the person who was in this house it was a messy eviction…

My last landlord lived next door and despite that took sometimes years to get basic safety stuff sorted or Windows fixed that broke due to poor installation. I tried contacting him to get stuff sorted and fixed around the house before we left but guess who went really quiet and didn’t come out and try to fix things so then he wouldn’t have to pay for it but it would come out of our deposit.

I’m fed up with renting but buying a house isn’t on the cards either. The housing and rental market is stupid. I can’t see it getting any better any time soon.
