I’m not sure how reintroducing wolves is going to work in Britain. First of all wolves are very territorial and will roam hundreds of miles to start their own packs, that obviously isn’t an issue in places like Alaska and Russia on a tiny island like Britain 2023 you can see the problem.
Secondly how exactly are you going to protect them from the land owners that brought them to the state of extinction in the first place? Almost 60% of the rural area in Scotland is owned by around 500 people and their game wardens won’t tolerate any kind of predator on their land whether animal in question is protected or not.
And then thirdly you’re going to have to deal with the farmers, good luck with that.
It might work in the Republic of Ireland
edit- their not there.
Wolves ? It’s bad enough I have to live around dogs, let alone a frigging wolf ?!?
I am 100% in favor of bringing more forests and wildlife back into all of the UK, but wolves? I’m not so sure about that tbh.
Wouldn’t they be a danger to people, pets and livestock? I get that other countires have much more dangerous wildlife, but we’re not really used to that here.
The only people who think rewilding is mainly about wolves are newspaper headline writers. There are massive biodiversity benefits to be had from simply reducing grazing pressure on parts of the landscape. Check out what’s happening in places like Mar Lodge Estate in Scotland.
The reason we don’t have wolves is because we decided we had enough of them killing our animals and our people.
We should have more woodland and more access to that land.
But bringing back wolves is fucking stupid.
That’d be amazing, but we’d probably have to reduce our population by about a half, first.
Even then, there’d be a bunch of farmers wanting to kill them for whatever bullshit reasons they want to kill everything else.
More roadkill. Deer, badgers, foxes, dogs, cats, children, cyclists and now wolves.
Where will it end??
Can’t wait to hear the folk who scream ‘Wot abowt farmas’ when it comes to housing support doing this on farming land…
Don’t focus on the wolves part of this – most rewilders are much more interested in restoring forests, wetlands, meadows, and bringing ecosystem engineers (such as beavers) back before even thinking of bringing back wolves.
The UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world, we desperately need to rewild as much as possible to try to get some biodiversity back (it also helps with things like combating climate change, reducing flooding, the mental health benefits of nature and so on).
Why wolves though? Why not just allow hunting deer? Wolves seems a messy solution
We need proper wild spaces, not the heavily maintained, barren wilderness we have now. There is also nothing wrong with careful reintroduction of apex predators. The UK has been like this since the Romans came and the land is suffering from it, the great thing is we now have much more knowledge of how to rewild the UK properly and projects like the reintroduction of beavers show us what can be achieved when ecologists and conservationists are allowed to do what they can.
Rewilding right now is vital to prevent complete ecological collapse. Our nature will not survive long-term without it. Let’s not focus on the wolves part; there are many more other things that need to be done first. Restoration of forest (and not sad monocultures). Leaving land to come back as grassland and meadows. Reducing pollution in rivers (stop pumping shit into them). Reducing dependency on cars so that the animals that do survive aren’t immediately flattened. Otherwise we can say goodby to all of it. The food chain will collapse.
What what? “Who I think I’m arguing with”…jm arguing with you. Yoh want wolves I want no wolves. I have made my position very clear. What is it you didn’t understand, to in some way think i’m arguing against farmers…in what universe does anything I have said make you think that. Please actually argue with the things I have said not just random positions you would rather argue against. I believe that any notion of a “real” wild woods, is a notion akin to religion. There is no such thing. Only an idea propagated by people that like arbitrarily picked definitions. The question is: do we want the woods to be more or less hospitable to humans than it currently is. You say it should be less hospitable….this nonsense about farmers or whatever it is you were getting at has 0 to do with anything I said an I would ask you to please stick to arguing against things I have actually said not things you wish I had said, as you can form an argument against that fictitious position you attribute to me for ease of argument forming.(I believe there is even a special term for such an infraction during debate). So try again….I stopped reading anything after the first paragraph as if you start with a strawman the rest is likely equally gibberish.
