Olivia Pratt-Korbel’s mother joins push for offenders to be made to attend sentencing

  1. They don’t really have a lot of leverage to force someone into something when they’re already going to prison for that long law or not. What are they gonna do? Tag an extra couple of years onto the minimum 42 he’s already facing? He’s never getting out.

  2. This continues to sound like a pointless thing to waste energy on. So what if they don’t attend the sentencing. They’re going to have to serve the sentence anyway and hearing it read out won’t bring back a murdered victim, undo any pain caused by the crimes committed, make anyone feel the slightest bit better, cause the offender to feel genuine remorse, anything like that. I don’t see why it has become such an issue.

  3. To all those saying that this is a waste of time because the offender could just kick off in the dock, have you never heard of tranquillisers???

  4. I don’t care what Olivia Pratt-Korbel’s mother thinks. I’d rather hear the opinion of someone that can consider the issue from a neutral perspective, not someone who is emotionally compromised.

  5. It brings closure and justice seen in victims family’s which is very important. Its a simple thing but means more to family. As for waste of time money argument. Well let’s just let go of criminals because it costs time money and effort to catch them in the first place

  6. I don’t think people should be forced to attend (physically or otherwise) but it seems entirely reasonable to take their decision into account when deciding what the sentence is.

  7. The problem with this is that if you physically force someone to attend, their behaviour during sentencing will probably be worse for the victim’s family than if they weren’t there.

  8. I cannot see this making a difference in a case like this. The murderer will never feel remorse over what he did, so what good will dragging them to court achieve? It might be cathartic for the family but is that what we should be spending time and money on in the justice system?

  9. I’m not too fussed about this to be honest. Personally if they are too scared to attend and want to jump straight to the many, many years behind bars…good, saves us the cost of escorting them there and back.

If you like, stick another 24 hours on their sentence for contempt of court

  10. All that would happen is the prisoner would find ways to avoid attending the hearing and drag it out so they don’t get sentenced for months or years. Surely a worse result?

  11. I am of the firm opinion they should be dragged there and face the Judge. Why does our justice system always seem to be in favour of the bad guy.
