  1. Pistachios are usually harvested with their shells intact. During the quality checking process, some nuts may be damaged or unsuitable for consumption, and these nuts are discarded. Some nuts fall out of the shells and these can be discarded and sent to a different line (shelled nuts). The empty shells are often not discarded as the process does not identify the empty shells as effectively as the process that identifies bad/discoloured nuts. I don’t think it is unique to Lidl.
