Who could be Boris Johnson’s successor?

  1. Sunak does seem a natural candidate, I dislike him but unlike all the other suggestions he’s not a complete moron.

  2. Esther mcVey perhaps? Jeremy Hunt is also a sleeper

Tory leadership contests have a rich history of relative unknowns winning. Look at Cameron in 2005

They’ll need somebody not involved with the Johnson government I think. Unfortunately there’s not many left. I would begin to look at the big names under the May government

Rishi is very unpalatable to a lot of the Tory grassroots. Con socialist is a term I hear a lot about him

  3. I think it comes down in part to their Brexit stance and how that plays out. The party can see it’s not going well, so will they want to distance themselves from Boris and disavow what they can now call *Boris’s* Brexit? Going for a Remainer, or an unknown, would allow them to shed all that baggage. That’s why I don’t see the likes of Sunak or Raab getting the nod. Rishi also has some of this Christmas party stink on him. Patel is clearly two or three fat mice away from a winter hibernation, so she seems unlikely. Truss just isn’t credible as a leader or adult. Gove is who you pick when literally everybody else has died.

If the party members are still maintaining their Brexit delusions, Rishi seems the likely winner.

But if not, my money is on Hunt. He’s had ministerial experience, isn’t tarred with the Brexit or COVID mismanagement brushes, and fits the demographic profile the Tory party members like.

I also think Tugendhat might be worth a cheeky fiver, he made a good name for himself in the Afghanistan fiasco, also doesn’t have the Brexit or COVID stink, has the demographic advantage and has some military background. But, no ministerial experience.

  4. Forgive my ignorance, but is this list insinuating that Starmer would jump ship, I know he’s a Tory-lite but that would be abhorrent.
