‘A historic mistake’: Brussels government opposes widening of large ring road

  1. Car drivers keep claiming they want better public transit.

This Flemish government is gutting public transit while spending tens of millions on expanding car infrastructure.

Where is all the outrage from those car drivers who supposedly want better public transit? Oh right… Nowhere to be found.

  2. > Onder andere de vraag van Brussel om een kilometerheffing mee te nemen in het ontwerp werd door Vlaanderen niet meegenomen.

Of course not, charging based on usage – like we do for public transport – would make cars a lot less competitive.

  3. A lot of people don’t understand how dire the situation is. The amount of bypassing traffic through Steenokkerzeel and other municipalities is just unmaintainable. Cars are here and people like to work in Brussels, and they are not gonna disappear soon.

If anything, blame whoever designed this mess in the 70s. The ring of Brussels simply cannot handle traffic for *both* local and passing traffic.

  4. The best way to increase the traffic capacity of the Brussels ring? Just put a speed camera box every 500m. Much cheaper than an extra lane, heck, it might even pay for itself!

You don’t even need to arm them all at all the time, it is enough to not tell people which ones are active!

  5. I would love to see a train-line following the ring (So you don’t need to stop in Brussels when doing Nivelles-Liege or Ottignie-Antwerpen., and metro line going at least up to the ring, if not up to Flanders. It’s ridiculous to have the Metro 5 stopping in Herman-Debroux when you could add like 2 more stations to reach the ring at Leonard, so people commuting could let their car and enter Brussels without building up more traffic. Same for the future metro 3, why stop in Bordet rather than at the Zaventem airport ?

This kind of change can push car out of Brussels and out of the ring

  6. This article made me mad and sad at the same time. Induced demand is a very real concept and the goverment seems stuck in a car centric mentality. The astronomical cost of this project + the maintenance cost over its lifetime would be better invested in public transport. This extension will NOT solve the traffic problems that we are facing. Brussels is doing a lot of good things when it comes to sustainable mobility but projects like this shows us that a lot of work is still ahead of us to becoming less car-centric.

  7. You would think that with the incontrovertible proof of induced demand, this proposal wouldn’t have even left the ground. Yet here we are with a half-assed proposal to increase capacity on just one portion of the ring road, which will further bottleneck the rest that hasn’t been increased, and will indeed not address the real issue. I love driving as much as the next person, but if you give me the option of public transit versus sitting in traffic, I will gladly take public transit. I can listen to my podcasts/music just the same, and not have to worry about catching a cramp in my right leg due to braking so much.

  9. Extending the Ring is huge mistake. Urban traffic will instantly fill the new lanes. But new road is needed for yesterday. The problem is that if you travel east – west, you have to cross Brussels or Antwerpen ring. So, you have to stay in the traffic jams with the daily commuters. It is very bad. Extending A21 to Lokeren or something similar would make miracles for long distance travel. And brusselse/antwerpse traffic must be solved by better public transport, not better rings. But .. I understand why the goverment wants new lanes instead of new road. Making investments in new locations in vlaanderen is almost impossible.

  10. Hebben die pipo’s nog nooit gehoord van “induced demand”? Betere doorstroming m’n kloten… het eerste jaar misschien, maar dan zit het terug vast.

  11. Thank God. How these people can continue to throw away millions by ignoring the basic law of induced demand baffles me completely. It’s our money. It’s been proven that WIDENING DOESN’T WORK. It’s maddening!

    Invest in solutions, not cars.

  12. STOP CALLING IT A RING ROAD.
    Because it is not.
Making it a true ring road is part of the solution.

  13. Might be overlooking it but JFC another massive issue here is poor air quality and the role of huge traffic. If people are so obsessed with ‘what it costs me’ try to factor in issues on individuals and cost to the health system over time.

The whole of company cars, resistance to good move and alternative infrastructure is so depressing and yet predictable.
